Folks,

If you've already seen the "Mapping the New World" exhibit in the McClung museum that Will and Kurt put together, read no further.

But if, like me, you've been meaning all semester to get over there, and just haven't managed to do so, you might want to put this on your Sunday "to do" list, as Sunday (May 22, tomorrow) is the last day of the exhibit.

Hour are 1-5, and admission is free.

Sincerely,

Sally

Hi Everyone,
The McClung Museum, Kurt Butefish and I would like to invite you all to attend the opening reception for "Mapping the New World". The reception is Friday, January 14 from 5:00-7:00pm at the museum. If you would like to attend, please RSVP 974-2144. Otherwise, the exhibit will be open to the public from January 15 - May 22.

The core of the exhibit is a selection of 29 original maps that date from 1493 to 1847. Starting with a Ptolemaic map of the world as conceived in the Middle Ages, the maps in the exhibition then trace the increasing geographical knowledge of the New World finally homing in on the southeastern United States and ultimately Tennessee. The introductory section of the exhibition addresses how early maps were made. Included are seven early navigational instruments on loan from the Smithsonian, National Museum of American History, and the Behring Center. Basic concepts such as lat/long and projection are explained. The last section explores today's geospatial revolution employing satellites, GIS, and GPS.

We hope you will get a chance to stop by and to encourage the students in your Spring Term classes to do likewise.

Thanks,
Will and Kurt
