The Museum Division of the Mississippi Department of Archives and History
(MDAH) seeks an Exhibit Historian.  The position involves work that is
highly professional in nature and held to high standards.  Duties include
the design and fabrication of exhibit components and artifact mounts, as
well as researching, writing, and editing museum text.  Incumbents work
under the general supervision of the Director of Exhibits; however,
incumbents will also work with the collections section to prepare storage
mounts, as well as assist with the preservation and management of the
museum’s collections.  The Historian II must be creative, have a working
knowledge of power tool operation and construction techniques, be able to
work as part of a team with the ability to multi-task, and be willing to
learn new techniques.  The position requires a degree in graphic design,
history, or a related field.  Experience in exhibit design and production is
preferred.  Knowledge of computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Adobe
Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and Re:discovery Proficio is a plus.

 *Education and experience must meet one of the following criteria:*

   - * *  Master's Degree from an accredited four-year college or
   university, in an academic field acceptable to the employing authority.


   - Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university,
   and two (2) years of experience in work related to the above-described
   duties.

   and four (4) years of experience in work related to the above-described
   duties.

*JOB SUMMARY: *

Responsible for operational oversight of the Elkhart County Historical
Museum which is owned and operated by the Elkhart County Parks Department;
in conjunction with the collections of the Elkhart County Historical
Society.  The position oversees and works with staff to manage the
collections, prepare exhibits, write grants, and assist with the planning of
public events.  The Manager acts as a liaison between Elkhart County Parks,
Elkhart County Historical Society, Elkhart County Genealogical Society and
general public.



*DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*

-          Responsible for the day to day operations of the museum by
planning, developing, and executing museum and visitor services including
tours, special exhibits and programs.

-          Supervises and schedules staff and volunteers –including
Assistant Museum Manager, Educator Curator, Part-time Maintenance, and
Part-time Secretary.

-          Acts as liaison between the Elkhart County Park Department/Park
Board and the Elkhart County Historical Society, and Elkhart County
Genealogical Society. Assists these organizations with building
partnerships, setting goals, and collaborating together to fulfill
long-range goals.

-          Recruits, hires and trains new staff.

-          Assists Superintendent of Operations with management of museum’s
park operating budget and tracking expenditures of the museum.

-          Oversees marketing and advertising related to the promotion of
museum activities, with assistance from marketing coordinator.

-          Oversees the preservation of the Elkhart County Historical
Society collection and coordinates conservation of collection items by
outside professionals.

-          Supervises the building and grounds maintenance as well as assist
the Superintendent of Parks with estimates and building improvements.

-          Collaborates with Operations and Maintenance Divisions for major
special events such as reenactments and other historical related park
events.

-          Researches and writes grants that will enhance exhibits,
programs, and events at the museum.

-          Assists the Historical Society with membership activities and
benefits.

-          Oversees implementation of an annual educational/interpretive
strategic plan.

-          Ability to develop and present public programs

-          Position requires evening and weekend hours.

-          Other duties as assigned.



*KNOWLEDGE/EDUCATION*

Bachelor’s degree in history, public history, anthropology, archives
management, museum studies, or related field.  Prior experience should
demonstrate leadership and management experience.  Master’s degree highly
preferred.  Midwest history and material culture.  Knowledge/experience with
graphics design , web 2.0.  Strong public speaking skills.

*CERTIFICATIONS: *Valid driver’s license, Pre-employment drug test and
criminal background check.



*PREVIOUS WORKING CONDITIONS : *Two to five years progressive experience in
a museum setting including management.



*PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS*

Working conditions with occasional minor discomforts from exposure to
less-than-optimal lighting, temperature, and air conditions.  May involve
lifting moderately heavy items up to 40 pounds or an equivalent weight.

Director, University of Alabama Office of Archaeological Research
Position is responsible for solicitation and administration of CRM contracts
and grants, supervision of OAR personnel, implementation of relevant federal
and state standards, oversight of the fee curation program for
archaeological collections, and oversight of the management of Alabama State
Archaeological Site file and On-Line Archaeological Resources Database.
Minimum Qualifications are a MA in archaeology, anthropology, history or
other relevant field and at least five (5) years of relevant experience. A
doctorate is preferred to assure a scholarly focus for research and
recognition by the professional community. Effective verbal and written
communications skills. Excellent interpersonal, leadership and
organizational skills are required. The individual in this position is
expected to maintain registration in the RPA. Valid U.S. driver's license
and be at least 21 and have an acceptable MVR as determined by the insurance
