HEAD, SPECIAL COLLECTIONS RESEARCH CENTER


The North Carolina State University Libraries seeks a Head, Special Collections Research Center to lead a dynamic special collections and archives program in support of teaching, learning, and research at the university. The incumbent provides strategic and effective management of collections, policy, budget, and personnel (12 staff and 4 graduate assistants) in a customer-oriented, technologically sophisticated environment. In this highly visible position, the incumbent works closely with faculty, researchers, and administrators, facilitates student use of primary source material, and cultivates donors and supporters. He or she leads the Center’s efforts to integrate the special collections program into the collections, spaces, services, and digital initiatives of the NCSU Libraries. The Head of the Special Collections Research Center collaborates with colleagues from across the Libraries to support a growing digital collections program, including collecting and managing born-digital materials. The incumbent oversees an active portfolio of processing and digitization grants, including a CLIR hidden collections award to process the Libraries’ extensive modernist architecture holdings. This position participates in library planning and serves on library-wide committees, task forces, and teams. NCSU Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Reports to the Associate Director for Collections & Scholarly Communication.

Qualifications
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent advanced degree in a relevant field. The successful candidate will be an experienced librarian with a current record of increasingly responsible work in special collections and of sound financial and operational management. Proven effectiveness in working with students, faculty, and researchers is required. Proficiency in leading strategic initiatives to develop print and digital collections is expected, along with understanding of the scholarly communication process. Outstanding written and oral communications and interpersonal skills are essential. Candidates should demonstrate an ongoing and current record of professional development and contribution. Preferred: ALA-accredited MLS. Preference will be given to candidates with proven success in building strong research collections or digital initiatives, grant writing and administration, and donor relations.

Salary and Benefits
The Libraries offers a highly competitive salary in recognition of applicable education and experience for this position. Librarians have non-tenure track faculty status (without levels of rank). Benefits include: 24 days vacation, 12 days sick leave; State of NC preferred provider medical insurance, and state, TIAA/CREF, or other retirement options.
