Canoe and Hikers,

I just got off the phone with a friend of mine from Alabama who was in tears.  Several communities from Tuscaloosa to the Tennessee state line are completely destroyed.  She is fine but lost two friends to the disaster.  Her house is also without running water or electricity.  The stores are abandoned and devoid of goods.  Despite it all she is doing relatively well.  Unfortunately not everyone in that area is.  Thousands of people have nothing left but the clothes they have on and their dignity.

Governor Bentley requested aid from the federal government before the storm even hit, but it has yet to arrive.  Barack Obama touched down in Tuscaloosa for two hours before departing to more important things like the shuttle launch and finally agreed that the people would get whatever they need.  It took two days to even acknowledge the problem, who knows how long before it is actually solved?

I’m not going to give a history lesson, but we are called the Volunteers for a reason.  These people are devoid of the basic needs of life and it is our duty as Vols to help in any way we can.  I’ll be departing Knoxville late tomorrow afternoon with all the water jugs and non-perishables I can afford.  I’m accepting donations in the form of food from anyone I can between now and when I leave if you would like to help.  I’ll be taking them to a radio station in Madison, AL that has become a temporary distribution facility.

Please keep the people of Alabama on your mind,

Isaac Bosley
