Recent publications, presentations and promotions
SLIS Goodyear Professor in Knowledge Management Denise Bedford, Ph.D., has been appointed to the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) Standards Board. Also: she served on a panel at the February 2011 eDiscovery for Financial Services conference where the topic of discussion was “Legal Speaks Greek; IT Speaks Latin - Effective EDiscovery Interactions”; her article "Enterprise-level semantic technologies," has been published in the March/April 2011 issue of Analytics Magazine (http://viewer.zmags.com/publication/142f6b66#/142f6b66/24); her proposal “Automated Metadata Generation and the Critical Role of Catalogers and Indexers in Technical Services of the Future,” has been accepted to the Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians 2011 conference; she has been named North American Regional Editor of the International Journal of Information Management, a peer-reviewed journal for managers responsible for designing and managing complex information systems.
Michael O. Bice, SLIS/IAKM professor in health informatics, spoke on “Clinical Analytics for the Practicing Health Care Professional” at Kent State College of Nursing’s “Driving the Future ’11” event in March at the Cleveland State University Cole Center.
SLIS Professor Rosemary Du Mont, Ph.D., will present "An Assessment of She Who Is: The Mystery of God in Feminist Theology Discourse by Elizabeth A. Johnson: A Bibliometric Exploration of Knowledge Diffusion" at the Second International Conference on Religion & Spirituality in Society in Vancouver in 2012. Also: she received a Master of Arts in theology from Walsh University in December 2010.
IAKM Assistant Professor Karl Fast, Ph.D. presented a full-day workshop at the 2011 IA Summit in Denver (March 30 – April 3) with Matthew Milan, a principal at Normative Design in Toronto (http://normativedesign.com/). He also presented "Making Insight: Practical techniques and emerging theories for data analysis" at the IA Summit, and will present "Thinking with Your Hands" at the Midwest UX conference in Columbus (April 9-10).
A paper by Dr. Karen Gracy, SLIS Assistant Professor, and Dr. Denise Bedford, Goodyear Professor in Knowledge Management, titled "Leveraging Semantic Analysis Technologies to Increase Effectiveness and Efficiency of Access to Information," has been accepted to 3rd Qualitative and Quantitative Methods in Libraries International Conference in Athens, Greece. Dr. Gracy will present at the conference in May 2011.
SLIS Assistant Professor Meghan Harper, PhD., has just signed a new book contract with Neal Schuman Publishers to coauthor a textbook titled Cataloging for School Librarians. Anticipated publication date is Fall 2011. In addition, she and Michelle Baldini, MLS, SLIS grants coordinator, have published their fifth article in a series of five for the online version of Knowledge Quest, the peer reviewed journal of AASL. The article is titled “Making Correlations Series of Aligning Library Resources to Academic Content Standards.”
An article by SLIS Assistant Professor Dr. Kiersten Latham, "Medium Rare: Exploring Archives and Their Conversion from Original to Digital Part Two - The Holistic Knowledge Arsenal of Paper-based Archives," has been published in the March 2011 issue of Library and Information Science Research Electronic Journal (http://libres.curtin.edu.au/libres21n1/Latham__EssOp_LIBRES21n1.pdf) Also: her proposal (with Elee Wood, Linda Thomson/Helen Chatterjee) on "The Intertwining Body/Self/Museum" has been accepted for presentation at the 30th International Human Sciences Research Conference, being held at St. Catherine’s College, Oxford, UK, July 27-30, 2011.
SLIS Assistant Professor Dr. Miriam Matteson has authored a chapter in E-Reference Context and Discoverability in Libraries: Issues and Concepts. SLIS Assistant Professor and alumna Athena Salaba, Ph.D., has been awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor. She holds a Ph.D. from the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MLIS from Kent State University. Her research areas include organization of information, resource description and access with emphasis on subject access to information, knowledge organization systems (KOS), conceptual modeling of knowledge organization, user information-seeking behavior and user studies.
SLIS Interim Director Don A. Wicks, Ph.D., presented "Understandings of Domestic Violence Revealed Through the Information Vehicle of the Sunday Sermon" at the International Conference on Religion and Spirituality in Society in Chicago on Feb. 15, 2011. The paper was co-authored by Wicks and SLIS Assistant Professor Dan Roland, Ph.D.
SLIS Adjunct Instructor Roland M. Baumann, Ph.D., contributed a chapter on “Advocacy and Fundraising at the Oberlin College Archives” to a book titled Many Happy Returns: Advocacy and the Development of Archives, ed. Larry J. Hackman (published by the Society of American Archivists).
SLIS alumna Tessa Catlin (MLIS '09) is the Manager of the Learning Resource Center at Strayer University in Cincinnati, Ohio.
An article by SLIS alumnus Timothy Dickey, Ph.D. (MLIS '07), titled “Books as Expressions of Global Cultural Diversity: Data Mining for National Collection Analysis” was accepted for publication in Library Resources & Technical Services.
SLIS alumna Heidi Landskroener (MLS '05) has been promoted to Children's Librarian at the Addison Branch of the Cleveland Public Library.
SLIS alumna Rikki Steingass, MLIS '09, received a 2011 YALSA Teen Tech Week Mini Grant for Bluffton Public Library. The Steampunk Awareness Day featured a book discussion (and teens got to keep the book), a How-to presentation on Steampunk ‘guns’ (Nerf guns), lots of food, costumes, and a movie.
