I thought about your range of questions for several days. My initial response is: There are too many covering too wide a range of data. Having written that, I would suggest that deanships in professional programs may fit essentially two models: leaders and scholars. I have seen where institutions will hire someone for his or her leadership skills to manage a situation, while others will hire someone for his or her scholarship to influence a situation. And, yes, there are clearly combinations of both. I do not think that we are seeing differences from past generations, but a continuing shifting of emphasis as situations change. Those were the days ! thanks for sharing your memories of him As a graduate student at Albany for my Masters program I had one of my last classes with Dr Tom Galvin who retired from SUNY Albany, but had quite a career as well very involved actively with both ALA most of his career and also as Dean at the now iSchool at Pittsburgh for many years also.
