Simmons has not been accepting applications to the DA program for quite a
while now. We developed a PhD program some years ago. Students in the DA
program at the time were given the option of transferring into the PhD, and
many did. Those who were seeking a managerial rather than academic career
trajectory chose to stay. We will hood a DA student this coming May, and
have two remaining (they are in a special DA supervisor track in the school
library teacher program). Although several of our many DA alums have become
faculty, the intention of the DA was to prepare students for leadership
positions in libraries. The DA evolved into our PhD in managerial
leadership, which began with IMLS funding. We feel that the DA was a
valuable degree, with a solid foundation of education in research and
management, but we found that it was not well understood by the academic
world at large.
