*Summer Internship #1:*
Collections Department
Title: Collections Intern
Number of Positions Open: 1
Compensation: $3000 stipend. No housing provided.
Time Commitment: 10 weeks, 40 hrs per week M-F, Closed 4th of July.
June 9- August 12, 2011
Project: The Intern will play an essential role in improving the
documentation of the Museum’s collection. The Intern will process the
museum’s Doll House Accessory collection currently in storage. This involves
cataloging the objects, physical numbering, digital photography, packing
objects for storage and entering information into Past Perfect. Intern will
identify and correct numbering issues, conduct research in museum files to
verify sources, record any known provenance and create box lists for object
tracking. Intern will make deaccession recommendations to collections
department based on established criteria and participate in all Collections
Committee activities.
Intern will be supervised by Registrar Calleen Carver.
Qualifications: Seeking a motivated, organized, self starter who is
currently enrolled in a museum studies program or who has previous museum
experience. Knowledge of Past Perfect preferred, but not required.

Education Department
Title: Program Intern
Number of positions: 2
Compensation: $1000 stipend; No housing provided.
Time Commitment: 120 Hours (10 weeks, 12 hrs per week minimum) June 6-
August 13
Tuesdays, 1:00-5:00; Wednesdays, 12:30-4:30; 4 hours
over the weekend
Duties/Responsibilities/Projects: The program interns will facilitate the
Adventures in Learning summer series which explores various aspects of the
collection through tours and hands-on workshops. The interns will present
pre-structured hands-on workshops and will be responsible for creating a new
museum program in collaboration with the interpretation intern. Interns
will also assist the front-line staff with visitor orientation and
participate in weekly readings and discussions.
Supervision: Laura Taylor, Educator and Amanda Clark, Assistant Museum
Educator
Qualifications: Seeking undergraduates interested in pursuing a career in
museum education. Candidates must have strong interpersonal skills and
demonstrated experience working with the public. Must be a self-starter
with high standards and exemplary problem solving skills. History, art, and
museum studies majors are encouraged to apply.

Duties/Responsibilities/Projects: The interpretation intern will be
responsible for delivering oral presentations as part of the Adventures in
Learning series and will also deliver highlights tours of the collection.
The interpretation intern will collaborate with the program interns to
create and present an original program for the museum. The interpretation
intern will also assist the front-line staff with visitor orientation and
participate in weekly readings and discussions.
Supervision: Laura Taylor, Educator and Amanda Clark, Assistant Museum
Educator
Qualifications: Seeking an undergraduate with a dynamic personality and
experience with public speaking. Candidate must have strong interpersonal
skills and demonstrated experience working with the public. History, art,
museum studies and English majors are encouraged to apply. Special
preference will be given to UMKC students who have completed English 309WI:
Rhetorics of Public Memory.

The Monticello College Foundation Internship in Museum Education provides an
exciting and challenging opportunity to work with museum educators, exhibits
staff, and curators in a mid-sized museum of natural history, anthropology,
and art.
The Monticello Intern will help coordinate the volunteers and day-to-day
operations of the Museum’s new hands-on children’s gallery (the "Play
Museum”). The intern also plans and implements monthly children’s programs,
and assists with school programs and family events.
Requirements: a Bachelor's degree in education, anthropology, natural
science, museum studies, history, or art; career interest in museum
education; and experience working with the public. Experience leading
volunteers, teaching, or Master's degree a plus. Computer skills in word
processing, database management, and desktop publishing are preferred.
Flexibility, maturity, strong organizational skills, caring personality, and
enthusiasm for working with children and volunteers - especially retirees -
are very important.
The internship will run from September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012. There is
a monthly salary of $1,618 plus a benefits package including group medical
and life insurance, holidays, vacation, personal business days, and sick
time.
