Central University Libraries seeks applicants for the position of Science Research Librarian, one of a team of subject librarians who share responsibility for developing high quality collections and delivering both general and specialized reference, research, and instructional services. Title:   Curator of Exhibitions

Reports to:  Director   

Supervises:  Curatorial Assistant; Registrar, Registrar's staff, Technical Services Supervisor and crew on exhibitions-related projects

Responsibilities:
(1) Works with the Director to develop long-range exhibition plans for the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art.
(2) Organizes exhibitions and their accompanying publications for presentation at the Museum and subsequent circulation to other venues.
(3) Works closely with artists commissioned to create new works for exhibition by the Museum.
(4) Coordinates and oversees the installation of exhibitions borrowed from other institutions in the Museum's galleries.
(5) Develops and monitors annual departmental operating budget for exhibitions.
(6) Works with development staff to secure grants and other sources of financial support for Museum exhibitions.
(7) Serves on Collections Committee.

Qualifications:
 Demonstrated experience organizing exhibitions and producing publications is required.  Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal; strong interest in working with artists.  Masters degree in Art History with an emphasis in post WWII art is preferable.

The Sheboygan County Historical Museum is pleased to announce the availability of up to two (2) paid internships for the Summer of 2011. Several projects are available for an individual to choose from, including:

 

Education Program Cataloging. Work with collection and education staff to identify and catalog both Education and Core collection objects used in the Museum’s Full Day Student Education Programs. Duties may include numbering, data entry in PastPerfect, identification photography, object research, and volunteer contact regarding potential and/or previous donations.

 

New Acquisition Cataloging. Work with collection staff to catalog new acquisitions to the Museum’s core collection. Duties may include numbering, recording of critical object data (number, name, description, provenance, etc.) into PastPerfect, condition reporting, and identification photography.  As time allows, items may be prepared for storage and/or exhibit.

 

Sound Artifact Cataloging. Work with collection staff to catalog the Museum’s collection of sound recording artifacts, including cylinders, albums, and associated player equipment. Duties may include object research, numbering, recording of critical object data (number, name, description, provenance, etc.) into PastPerfect, condition reporting, and identification photography.

 

Applicants for this internship should be self-starters, able to work independently, detail oriented, and have excellent written and oral communication skills. Applicants must be comfortable working with computers, volunteers, and the public. A background (either education or work) in museum studies or history is preferable. Hours are flexible, but must occur primarily between 9 am and 5 pm, Monday-Friday. A stipend (to be paid upon completion of 150 hours) of $600 is available to an applicant who accepts this internship as part of an education experience.

 

The Sheboygan County Historical Museum is dedicated to “the discovery, collection, and preservation of information, records, and objects relating to the history of the county of Sheboygan and the dissemination of knowledge concerning the same.” Embracing this mission, the museum primarily serves the county’s 116,000 residents, along with members of the surrounding five counties through the maintenance of historic buildings and exhibits, full day student education programs, and extensive public programming, including numerous changing exhibits, a monthly historical program series, and several other public programs.

Summer Graduate Student Practicum

The Dickinson Research Center is seeking applications for the position of Summer Graduate Student Practicum to assist staff with processing collections within the Center, which serves as the library and archives for the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum.

Position Description: Summer 2011 practicum for two graduate students planning a career in an archives to work with manuscript materials. The goal of the practicum is to provide the students with experience in arrangement and description, creating collection inventories and finding aids, processing collections, learning and utilizing preservation techniques, assisting researchers in the reading room, and providing administrative and organizational support. Students will work with experienced staff to obtain these goals. The practicum may begin as early as May 23, 2011 and end as late as August 24, 2011.

Qualifications: Candidates must be currently enrolled in a graduate program in Archives or Library Science. They must also have strong written communication skills and experience interacting with the public professionally, be able to work independently, be organized and flexible, be reliable and responsible for their time and work, and be able to climb ladders and lift 40 pound boxes. Applicants must also have basic computer skills, including experience using Microsoft Word and Excel. Highly Desirable: Successful completion of two archives courses, including an introduction to archives and basic processing. Previous experience processing archival collections. Recent graduates may also apply, however, successful candidates must commit to completing the practicum term.

Compensation/Salary: Full-time temporary position; up to ten weeks at $10-12/hr (based on experience). Some flexibility is possible. No health or retirement benefits. Please note: there is no relocation allowance available for students at this time.

Environment: The Dickinson Research Center collects, preserves, and provides access to materials documenting the American West not only for the public, but in support of the museum's research, educational, curatorial and exhibition activities. The Center is actively pursuing collections of personal papers and business and organizational records that reflect and document the following five subject areas: Entertainment (Western popular culture), Western Art, Ranching, Native American, and Rodeo. Additionally, the Center also maintains the institutional records of the museum. The facility consists of a reading room, closed stacks (4226 sq.ft.), and overflow storage (1019 sq.ft.).

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: This position provides strategic and effective management of the Cataloging Department's activities, including cataloging of information resources in all formats and languages, non-MARC metadata creation, and provision of access to digital and electronic collections. Supervises a paraprofessional staff of 3-4 FTE. Provides leadership in the application of existing and emerging technologies to the cataloging of materials to enhance the access and use of library resources. Coordinates development of local cataloging policies and procedures. Ensures that appropriate quality control, problem resolution, routine maintenance, and other procedures are developed, monitored, and revised as needed for optimal effect on the library's catalog. Coordinates selected cataloging projects. Maintains awareness of and engagement with national and international trends and developments in cataloging and metadata standards, bibliographic and authority control, and knowledge management, with an emphasis on evaluating RDA and its potential implementation. Serves as a resource person regarding cataloging issues both within the department and in other areas of the library. Other duties include participation in library committees, task forces, special projects, and the Learning Commons Help Desk rotation. This librarian is also expected to produce creative and scholarly contributions to librarianship. The position reports to the Associate University Librarian for Technical and Collection Management Services.

REQUIREMENTS: MLS/MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited program. A minimum five years professional experience cataloging a variety of print and non-print formats in an online environment. A minimum two years increasingly responsible relevant supervisory experience. Demonstrated knowledge of cataloging standards, practices, and products, including but not limited to AACR2r, Library of Congress classification and subject heading schemes, Library of Congress Rule Interpretations, and MARC formats. Experience with the Innovative Interfaces Millennium integrated library system and OCLC Connexion. Commitment to enhancing public access to library resources. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, oral, and written communication skills and strong service orientation. Preferred qualifications include experience with national cooperative cataloging programs such as NACO or other PCC programs, and experience with non-MARC metadata schemes and digital libraries or institutional repositories. Reference experience is also preferred.
