Free Online Chat

Each year, the Office of the Parents Association coordinates online chats to allow parents and students a convenient opportunity to ask questions, provide feedback, and get information from UT staff. Online chatting is free, easy, and you can do it from anywhere! You're simply asked to take two minutes to create a secure, simple chat account. Click here for simple instructions for setting up an account or logging into an existing account.

The next online chat will be: Tuesday, March 29 from 5:30-7:00 PM (EDT). Click here just prior to the chat on March 29 to access the chat. Departments that will be available include Career Services, Student Health Services, Housing, and the Parents Association staff. Students are also encouraged to participate and ask questions! Email questions to [log in to unmask].

Family Weekend Theme Ideas

As our office staff plans and prepares for this year's Family Weekend, we would like to introduce a theme to the festivities. It's your weekend, and this is your chance to tell us what you want! The Family Weekend Planning Committee will vote and select a theme from all entries submitted. If your theme is picked, your student will receive a $500 textbook credit to use at the UT Bookstore for the fall 2011 semester. E-mail your theme ideas and programming suggestions to [log in to unmask]. The deadline to submit themes is April 15, 2011. For more information, see page 5 of the spring edition of TENNESSEE Family.

This workshop is designed to help your student prepare for an interview in terms of research, thinking about why an employer would want to hire him or her, knowing what to expect in an interview, and how to dress properly. The workshop will cover typical interview questions and questions your student might wish to ask a prospective employer. Click here for more information.

Theft Prevention Reminder

Theft of personal property is the highest reported crime on the UT Knoxville Campus. Typically the UT Police receive an increased number of unsecured property thefts between now and the end of the spring semester. In most of the reports students note that they 'were only gone for a minute' and they returned to find their property had been stolen. Items targeted include, but are not limited to laptops, student IDs, textbooks, and wallets/purses. Remind your son or daughter to NEVER leave their personal property unattended in a public area like the library, classrooms, etc. It takes thieves only seconds to steal these items. For more information on ways to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of theft, encourage your student to contact the Community Relations Unit of the UT Police Department at (865) 974-4674 or email [log in to unmask].

Student Financial Aid Information

April 1 is the priority date for students to submit requests for summer financial aid. If your student is planning to attend summer school in 2011, encourage him or her to complete the 2011 Summer Financial Aid Request by April 1. Click here to access the Summer Financial Aid Request Form.

Information for Parents

Emergency Notification Information - Broadcast Email Communications

Timely notifications are issued for certain incidents deemed to present an ongoing or immediate threat to the campus community. Different from UT ALERTS, incidents worthy of a timely notification are deemed to present less of an immediate safety concern for other UT students. Timely notifications consist of a broadcast email message to all students and staff, as well as flyers being posted in high pedestrian traffic areas. The university makes every attempt to send this information out as quickly as possible after an incident occurs. Several things may impact the timeliness of the information being disseminated including the length of time that it may have taken the victim to report the incident and the time it takes officers or other authorities to gather information. These notifications are provided so individuals can make informed decisions about their personal safety.

Honor Your Graduating Student with a Contribution to the Class of 2011 Senior Gift!

Senior Gift is an opportunity for UT seniors, families, and friends to take part in a long-standing tradition on campus. Since 1991, each graduating class has left a legacy to its alma mater through participation in an annual senior gift. Seniors have pledged their loyalty and exhibited their Volunteer pride by giving over $300,000 to scholarship endowments, UT academic programs, and permanent campus monuments.

Although gifts of any size are welcome, seniors who donate $55 or more will have a personalized brick placed on the Senior Sidewalk in Circle Park. In addition, they will receive commemorative honors cords to wear at graduation, recognition in their college's commencement program, and a special donor gift. For additional information and to make your gift online, click here or email [log in to unmask].
