Dear colleagues

The Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Excellence in Research Australia (ERA) 2012 Ranked Outlet Consultation is now open.

In preparation for the Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2012 round, the ARC is reviewing the ERA 2010 ranked journal and conference lists. This process occurs in two phases, the first being a public consultation, followed by a second phase where contracted peak bodies and academic groups review the public feedback received during Phase 1. The contracted peak bodies and academic groups will be responsible for making recommendations to the ARC regarding the final determination of the ERA 2012 ranked outlets.    The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is the peak body in Australia for Library and Information Studies (LIS) and has been since 1937 when it was established as the Australian Institute of Librarians. It is the largest LIS organisation in Australian with approximately 6,000 individual and institutional members.

International colleagues may be interested in the development of the ERA 2012 lists and to participate in this process.

To understand the consultation program read the document at: https://roci.arc.gov.au/Static/ERA_2012_Ranked_Outlets_Consultation_Fact_Sheet.pdf.

To participate in the ERA 2012 Ranked Outlets Public Consultation go to:  https://roci.arc.gov.au/.

To have a say, you must register. Find the link “Register” on the top right hand of the page. Follow the instructions to register. You will get an email to activate your account. Then you are in. Once you are in you have many options. To get an overview of which journals are in the LIS 0807 list, click on the link “Search Ranked outlets” link. At the top of the results page is a grey linked box, which enables you to nominate a new journal. The fields you will need to fill in here are: Title, outlet type (journal or conference), ISSN (or ISBN for conferences).  Further down the page are various ways to search. You can see the whole 0807 list if you search by FoR. There are a number of pages to scroll through to get the full list. At this stage there are 5 steps to go through to change or comment on the rank of a journal or FoR: Outlet eligibility, metadata, ranking, fields of research, final comments (including declaration of any conflict of interest).

Please note that this public consultation process closes at 8:00am Australian Eastern Standard Time, 4 April 2011 (new journal submission closed 21 March 2011).

ALIA is very involved in the ARC ERA 2012 process and is a listed peak body. The Association has a Research Committee incorporating active researchers and practitioners.  http://www.alia.org.au/research The Committee promotes the value of research, provides advice on the development ALIA's role in research, and has oversight of the Association’s research fund. The LIS Higher Educators Forum is hosted by ALIA. ALIA also publishes two premier peer reviewed journals to support LIS research and practice: Australian Library Journal (ALJ); and Australian Academic & Research Libraries (AARL).  http://www.alia.org.au/publishing/  These journals are long established and respected publications with more than one hundred years of publication between them. The Association also hosts the ALIA Biennial Conferences and, on alternate years, hosts the ALIA Information Online Conference.
