Dr. Anthony Bernier, an Assistant Professor with the San Jose School of
Library and Information Science (SLIS), has been appointed by American
Library Association (ALA) president-elect Molly Raphael to the Committee on
Accreditation (COA) for a four-year term commencing at the ALA Annual
Conference in 2011.

The COA consists of 12 members representing educators and practitioners.
The committee is responsible for executing ALA's accreditation program for
graduate programs in Library and Information Science (LIS). ALA's
accreditation program develops LIS education standards for approval by the
ALA Council and protects the public interest by verifying the quality of LIS
educational programs.

The COA objective is to "Ensure that accreditation standards reflect the
needs and core values of the profession." This objective is achieved through
reviewing standards in accordance with a five-year cyclical review schedule;
communicating how the standards address the needs and values of the
profession; maintaining and clarifying the standards; identifying additional
areas of need; and conducting a regular review of accreditation policies and
procedures.
