J. Paul Blakely Awards 2011

Call for Submissions

 

The East Tennessee Chapter of the Society for Technical Communication (STC/ETC) is now accepting entries for the J. Paul Blakely Awards. These annual awards, which recognize excellence in scientific and technical communication,  are awarded to students in four categories:

 

Graduate level                                                              Undergraduate level

Technical/Professional Communication

Technical/Professional Communication

Science Writing

Science Writing

 

STC/ETC will present award plaques on the evening of Tuesday, April 26, at a dinner meeting held in honor of the winners.  Two weeks before the award dinner, the competition chair will notify all applicants about the status of their submissions and provide details about the time and venue for the award dinner.

 

Applicants must be either:

1. Undergraduate majors or graduate students in a technical/professional communication concentration.

2. Undergraduate majors or grad students in science writing or related fields and concentrations.

 

Whatever the major and concentration, applicants must be preparing for careers in professional communication or science writing through accredited institutions of higher education in East Tennessee (e.g., University of Tennessee, East Tennessee State University, Tennessee Tech University, as well as Roane, Walters, Maryville, and Pellissippi State Community Colleges).

 

Applications must include:

• Cover letter formally applying for the scholarship.

 

• Resume.

 

• Transcript (unofficial transcript is fine).

 

• Sample of applicant’s own writing on a scientific or technical subject, or sample of applicant’s significant contribution to a publication or industry document (journal/newsletter article, news item, report, proposal, handbook, web page (provide URL), set of instructions, etc.  An explanation of the applicant’s role in preparing the article or other document (e.g., researching, editing, writing, designing) must be included.

 

• Autobiographical essay (500 to 1000 words) including a description of the applicant’s educational and career plans and how those plans are related to the fields of scientific or technical communication.

 

• Contact information for two references (name, title, relationship to applicant, postal address, e-mail address, phone number), including at least one college professor who is familiar with the applicant’s work.

 

Please provide four copies of your submission in separate envelopes marked “2011 J. Paul Blakely Awards, [Your Name].”  By noon on Wednesday, April 6, 2011, submit your materials to: Dr. Russel Hirst, 311 McClung Tower, University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN  37996-0430.
