Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature

Featured student: Laurence "Philip" Campbell, Jr.

Laurence “Philip” Campbell, Jr. is a mechanical engineering major who is currently working his second co-op rotation with BorgWarner Turbo Systems in Arden, N.C. During his first work term, in summer 2010, he shared the following information about his experience.

“I worked in the passenger car applications department. This department is the liaison with car companies like Ford. We work with these car manufacturers throughout the design and prototype phases. My job was to design test rigs and help set up tests that were a major part in all of these phases.

“The company offers several training events, most of which are optional and on a variety of topics.” Campbell said technical skills he gained over the summer included Pro-E, CAD, and SAP.

“I have noticed that everyone is really relaxed when they come in to work, and also that working full time can be quite enjoyable … (During company meetings) I learned to pay close attention and take notes!

“I have never been a good writer. Surprisingly enough, my job required me to write reports. I overcame this problem and learned that good English skills go a long way.”

Campbell offers this advice to other co-op applicants considering this employer: “I would advise him or her to learn as much mechanical and technical knowledge beforehand as possible.”

He said the most valuable benefit he received by accepting the co-op was: “I learned the background information and skills that I need to start a career in engineering!”

Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”
