Faculty News

Two Faculty Members Join the Department of Biosystems Engineering & Soil Science (BESS)

Dr. Andrea Ludwig is an ecological engineer who will be working in the areas of stream restoration and watershed management. She will be conducting research into effective practices for decreasing non-point source pollution in the state’s watersheds. She completed her Ph.D. in Biological Systems Engineering at Virginia Tech before joining the faculty at the UT Institute of Agriculture.

Dr. Jennifer DeBruyn came to the University of Tennessee from Queen’s University (Kingston, Canada) to complete her Ph.D. in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology with Dr. Gary Sayler, and later served as a postdoctoral associate with Dr. Mark Radosevich in BESS. DeBruyn’s research will focus on how microorganisms shape their environment. DeBruyn is already part of ongoing collaborations in BESS, the Center for Environmental Biotechnology and the Department of Microbiology, and is currently co-PI on a National Science Foundation award received in 2010.
DeBruyn holds a Research/Extension appointment, and after years of volunteering with various STEM outreach programs, is excited to be developing her own extension program for K-12 educators.

Research News

Welcome to COE's Newest Research Center!

Welcome to COE’s newest research center, the Center for Intelligent Systems and Machine Learning (CISML). Formed in 2010 and directed by Dr. Lynne Parker from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, CISML research focuses on diverse projects revolving around the theory and practice of intelligent system design and machine learning technologies. This includes areas of study such as pattern recognition, biologically-inspired cognitive architectures, bioinformatics, data mining and robotics, just to name a few. Due to its highly interdisciplinary nature, CISML includes faculty from computer science, computer engineering, nuclear engineering, statistics and psychology. CISML also includes six ORNL affiliates, making the center a truly collaborative effort. CISML’s Web site is now linked from the college’s research center web page here - http://www.engr.utk.edu/research/centers.html.
