Good News

--- Got the next big idea? Think you might have an entrepreneurial streak? Like challenges and the chance to make an impact? If so, UT's Anderson Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation, housed in the College of Business Administration, invites you to enter the fourth annual Business Plan Competition. In an effort to strengthen the entrepreneurial culture and spirit of the university, the competition encourages participants to enhance their understanding of new venture creation, polish their communication skills by presenting ideas to investor-judges and network with successful local entrepreneurs, business owners and venture capitalists. All UT undergraduate students -- from any college and any discipline -- are eligible. Students can enter any idea, from the world's best lemonade stand to a new way to harness solar energy.

--- The Public Relations Student Society of America and Buffalo Wild Wings will host a Wild Hoops and Wing Night featuring the Tennessee v. Vanderbilt game on Tuesday, February 22. Come to BWWs to participate in games and win prizes and other merchandise. Food and drink specials will be going on before and during the game. Festivities start at 8 p.m., game starts at 9 p.m. Like us on Facebook at BWW Presents: Wild Hoops and Wing Nights for coupon deals and follow us on Twitter at BWWKnox for chances to win prizes. Ten percent of sales this night will be donated to a philanthropy supported by the campus organization with the highest attendance.

--- TeamVOLS Annual "Spaghetti for Service" lunch and dinner fundraisers for Alternative Spring Break (http://activities.utk.edu/teamvols/alternative-break-trips/) are this week. Buy your $5 ticket from any trip participant, or at the door, and you will get ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT spaghetti, break, drink, salad and dessert. --- Vice Chancellor for Research candidate public forum, 10:30 - 11:45 a.m. tomorrow in the Baker Center Toyota Auditorium. Morris Foster, associate vice president for research for the University of Oklahoma, Norman, and vice president for strategic planning for the University of Oklahoma's Norman and Health Sciences Center campuses, will lead an open session and respond to questions. --- Diabetes Advocacy Board fundraiser, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. tomorrow in the Black Cultural Center. Purchase 2 slices of Mellow Mushroom pizza and a soda for $5. All money raised will be donated to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

--- The UT Women's Leadership Program begins the 2011 series with "The Best Years of Your Life: Navigating your 20-something crisis," 4 - 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, in UC 223-224. The twenties triangle often perplexes many of today's collegiate women. Learn how to turn your life's questions into your road map for tomorrow. --- "Baby Wants Candy," an improv musical act, will be performing at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, in the UC Auditorium. The comedy group is a springboard for national exposure, and in the past has featured performers Stephnie Weir and Nicole Parker (MadTV), Rachel Dratch and Seth Meyers (SNL), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Garry Tallent (Bruce Springsteen and the E St Band), Mark Pender (Max Weinberg 7) to name a few. The event will be free and open to all UT students and members of the community.

--- The UT Science Forum, noon Friday, Feb. 25, in Thompson-Boling Arena dining rooms C-D. Speaker: Jay Whelan, head and professor of the Department of Nutrition. Topic: "Will Eating an Extra Serving of Broccoli Help Prevent Prostate Cancer?" Free and open to the public. Questions? --- Telluride Mountain Film Festival, 7 - 10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 25, in the UC auditorium. America’s premier festival of mountain, adventure, environmental and cultural films is free for UT students with valid ID, $10 for faculty, staff and the general public. 

--- UT's 16th annual Dance Marathon fundraiser for East Tennessee Children's Hospital is this weekend! The event, sponsored by the TeamVOLS Volunteer Center, will be held Feb. 25-26 at TRECS. There is still time to sign up (until Thursday, Feb. 24.) to join the largest student-run philanthropy in the country and help raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network fight against childhood cancer.

--- The Poetic Vision Tour will be in Knoxville on Saturday, Feb. 26, from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the Cox Auditorium. The Poetic Vision Tour is a group of artists that perform "a fusion of spiritually-inspired folk-rock music and hip-hop poetry." The artists will perform original works as well as covers from artists such as Coldplay, Jason Mraz, Cat Stevens, the Beatles, Bob Dylan. Tickets are $5 for the general public, and free for UT students.

--- The Cultural Attractions Committee presents "DRUMline Live!," a musical extravaganza that highlights the iconic history and tradition of marching band performance and music through colorful costumes, vibrant musical numbers and a wealth of talent, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, at the Tennessee Theatre. --- Looking for an exciting leadership opportunity?  Attend the second L.I.V.E. Leadershop of the spring semester, 6 - 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, in Humes Hall Multipurpose Room West. Who is telling your story? Successful student leadership depends on managing and marketing your personal brand. This Leadershop will examine the challenges of authentic student leadership in the world of texts, tweets, and status updates. Come learn about the importance of your story and how you can have a great impact on the Volunteer Community. --- Mountain Bike or Climb Service Day, 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 26. Join one of two groups for a half day of community service, working to improve two local recreation areas. The other half of the day will be spent mountain biking at Fort Dickerson or climbing at the Obed Wild and Scenic River. All levels and abilities are welcome. --- Support Nourish International at UTK's summer project in Uganda. Visit http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/house-of-hope-uganda-farming-ut-knoxville/ to read about the project. Nourish International develops entrepreneurial, leadership and management skills and heightens global poverty awareness among college students as they collaboratively work with international non-profit organizations to alleviate extreme poverty. This year, the UTK chapter of Nourish is partnering with World Action for Humanity to assist a Ugandan House of Hope that provides education, nutrition, and medical care to orphaned children. --- Crankin for Access Bouldering Competition, 1 - 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 27, in HPER 202B. Climb and win prizes while benefitting the climbing community. Beginner, intermediate and advanced divisions in men's and women's categories.

Important Deadlines

--- UT provides several scholarships available to upperclassmen based primarily on campus leadership and campus and community service. The recipients of these scholarships are chosen in the spring by a committee appointed by the Division of Student Affairs. Students may apply themselves or may be recommended by another member of the campus community. --- Cultural Attractions Committee spring membership drive applications are due by 5 p.m. today. Applications may either be submitted in person to the Student Activities Office in the UC or e-mailed to [log in to unmask] Afterward be sure to sign up for an interview online at tiny.cc/cacspringinterview. 

--- This week is the final week to register for the 2011 Clifton M. Jones Student Leadership Conference, "LeadNow: Where True Change Lies," on Saturday, March 5, in the University Center. Conference registration is free and open to all students, but space is limited to the first 400 students who register until noon Friday, Feb. 25. --- The Office of the Dean of Students is sponsoring "UT to West Tennessee," a program designed to provide assistance to students in need of transportation back home to Memphis or Jackson, TN, over Spring Break. Tickets are on sale now for $25 at the UC Ticket Office. Please bring only cash. Ticket sales end on March 4. There will be limited seating and tickets are first come, first served.

--- The UT Parents Association is designing the 2011-2012 handbook for parents of current UT students. More than 10,000 parents receive the handbook each year, and they are asking for your input. If you have high-quality pictures of campus and students, inside or outside the classroom, you're invited to submit them to the Parents Association for a chance to have them published in the 2011-2012 handbook. The Parents Association will recognize all students' photos and give students full credit for each photo used. E-mail [log in to unmask] for more info and instructions on where to submit pictures. Photo submissions are due Friday, March 11.

Ready for the World Events

--- Take an Indian favorite, add an Italian dish and mix it with a good dose of Greek fare. That's the recipe for this week's Ready for the World Café. The menu includes curry chicken, shrimp with spinach, tomatoes and feta, lemon-pepper pork loin, ravioli with mushroom sauce, orzo and wild rice salad, ratatouille and Greek salad. The café is open from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. each Monday through Thursday in the Hermitage Room on the third floor of the University Center. Diners pay $11 for the all-you-can-eat buffet or $9 for a plate of food to carry out.
