Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature
Featured student: Adam Bonomo
Adam Bonomo is an industrial engineering major who spent the Summer 2010 semester working with B/S/H/ Home Appliances in Jacksboro, Tenn.
I worked in the Manufacturing Engineering Department. I was in control of the inventory system for the factory and completed various tasks as they were assigned to me.
I was able to learn some CAD and had extensive practice with Excel; I worked through a CAD work book and used Excel every day.
Bonomo said, [During company meetings] I learned some of the etiquette involved with the debating process in a professional setting.
On a challenge he overcame during this assignment: I designed a layout for a work station that did not quite accommodate the operator so I had to rework the layout a second time to get it right. If at first you dont succeed, try again.
Bonomos advice to other students considering this employer: Be ready for a commute; however, the staff is friendly and helpful!
The most valuable benefit I gained by my co-op experience was learning the etiquette involved with a professional position.
Students may read more about their peers co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking Resource Library (on the left margin) and selecting Students at Work In Their Own Words.

Students Build Battery Electric Vehicle, Need Survey Responses
An interdisciplinary team of 14 undergraduate and graduate students from five departments (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Civil and Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Materials Science and Engineering, and Mechanical, Aerospace, and Biomedical Engineering) is currently involved in the EPAs P3 program. The team is advised by Drs. Paul Frymier (PI), Chris Cherry, Robert Counce, David Irick and Leon Tolbert. The P3 program is a national student design competition for sustainability focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet (http://www.epa.gov/P3).
The team has built a battery electric vehicle that could take the place of a gas car for short, in-town, less than 15 mile one-way, single passenger commutes. It only takes $65 a year to run this vehicle 30 miles a day, 5 days a week, for 52 weeks. The students are also building a hydrogen fuel cell version of the vehicle. The next step in the competition is writing a report complete with public opinion on alternative vehicles. The report is due March 21, and the team travels to Washington D.C. to compete with 55 total teams on the national mall on April 14. Winners will be awarded $75,000 grants to fund the next portion of their projects. This team proposes to develop teaching modules for the Tennessee state curriculum that will educate middle school students about how science and technology can be applied to the development of sustainable transportation.
The team would like as many people as possible to take a five minute survey of their commuting habits. The survey is being broadly advertised at the university as well as in the Knoxville community at large. On Saturday, Feb. 26, the team will display its car and solicit people to take the brief survey in Market Square in downtown Knoxville. If youd like to participate, the survey can be found online here:
