Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature

Featured student: Leslie Roberts

Leslie Roberts is a civil and environmental engineering major who spent the Summer 2010 semester on an internship with Memphis Light, Gas and Water. She submitted the following information during her assignment:

“I worked in Water Engineering and was given several assignments: I helped on a design project; I helped update the 2010 Water Production Manual; I got to go out and see how everything involving water tied in together; and I completed an assignment for TDEC.

“I spent a week at the training center preparing for what I might face in the work force (and learned) designing and drafting.”

Roberts offered the following advice for other students considering this employer: “I would tell them to do it and get as much out of it as possible. Everything is great – the work place, the employees, and the relationships within the workplace. I can’t think of anything that would have made it better!

“I was really nervous about meeting people I didn’t know and asking them questions to help me complete my work, but it turned out that everyone was willing to help, and I learned that most people are willing to help you learn.”

Roberts said the most valuable benefit she received by accepting the internship was, “I got to see what real engineers do first hand!”

Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”

First-Principles Calculations for "Real" Materials - from Metastable Metallic Systems to Spintronics Materials

The rational design of engineered materials, which starts from a fundamental understanding of the interdependence between structure and function of a material and optimizes composition and processing based on this understanding, has emerged as one of the most important outcomes of the National Nanotechnology Initiative over the past decade. In this endeavor, fundamental modeling, informed by rigorous characterization, has frequently served as the link between structure and properties. Especially the so-called first-principles (aka ab-initio) methods have shown to be immensely useful in this role. This role encompasses the calculation of optimized structures; energetic information and thermodynamic data; kinetic parameters; electronic properties; and interpretation of characterization data, among others. In conjunction with higher-level methods, multiscale modeling capabilities have been developed that can close the loop between atomic structure and macroscopic measured properties.

This talk will cover the demonstration of novel predictive capabilities of first-principles modeling for structure and properties of two classes of materials, which are metastable metallic systems, such as high-temperature phases of metals that are mechanically unstable at room temperature, e.g. group-4 transition metals, and electronics/spinctronics materials with focus on group-14 semiconductors and graphene.
