*Description : *The Executive Director will manage all the Museum's

Librarian III, Youth Services Coordinator
Full-Time

SUMMARY:  Under administrative supervision, this is responsible
professional library work, which involves the application of

professional library techniques and procedures.  Performs related and
other work as required.

REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Attainment of B.A. or B.S. from an
accredited university/college; attainment of graduate degree

in Library and/or Information Science from an ALA-accredited
university; at least 1 year of full-time, post-MLS library
experience or two years of full-time paraprofessional relevant library
experience; supervisory experience preferred.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Comprehensive knowledge of: (1) professional library principles and
practices; (2) public library functions, facilities, and
operations; (3) patron needs and library services to meet those needs;
(4) standard library automated system modules;

(5) electronic and printed materials, resources and databases.
Demonstrated ability to:  (1) handle both routine operations and
long-range planning; (2) establish and maintain effective
working relationships with other employees and the public; (3)
supervise, train, and evaluate support staff;

(4) schedule department staff and work flow for maximum effectiveness;
(5) communicate effectively, orally and in writing, to
 groups and individuals; (6) be proficient on the computer with
various software.

GENERAL DUTIES

Ø    Responsible for planning the Sumer Reading Program annually;
orders materials, manuals, prizes, staff t-shirts and book bags, and
requests donations; schedules guests
for all branches; negotiates guest contracts; receives and reviews
invoices and sends in for payment.

Ø    Coordinates staff attendance to four youth services workshops annually.
Ø    Works with local television station and Shreveport Regional Art
Council for week-long Summer Reading Festival Kick-off program
annually; assist with writing and

planning Reading Festival play performance; help with stage set up and
various duties; coordinates staff participation at library information
book for Reading Festival
weekend display.
Ø    Plans and coordinates Revel Library Book Walk program annually.

Ø    Develops the youth book collection at Main; keeps reading and
listening materials collection current; weed books in the collection
as needed; replace worn materials
which still have merit.
Ø    Assists in system-wide story share programs with youth staff from
all branches; shares program ideas and encourage other youth staff to
program effectively.

Ø    Partner with local agencies such as Head Start and many community
agencies to advertise the library.
Ø    Reviews Saturday story time plan each week/month with Youth
Services Library Specialist; oversees bulletin board and book displays
at Main Youth Department; makes such

programs are advertised effectively.
Ø    Presents weekly story times and develops felt board stories and
practices presentation; makes school / child care facilities visits
and presents story sessions as
requested.

Ø    Personnel:  Hires, trains, supervises and evaluates one part-time
Library Specialist I; fully participates in the hiring process;
reviews work plans on a regular basis;
maintains effective working relationship with all staff and is
available for the staff to discuss all issues as needed; completes
payroll; processes and reconciles all leave

requests; completes substitutes usage report; schedules substitutes as
needed; covers for personnel shortages; recommends staffing needs and
changes; conducts investigations
and resolves employee inquiries and/or complaints; assists
administrative supervisors with handling of these and other personnel
matters; participates in corrective action

meetings; makes informed decisions based on policies listed in the
Employee Handbook; keeps staff and supervisors informed on new
policies and procedures .
Ø    Professional Development:  Attends monthly management meetings,
meetings of appointed committees, and workshops and conferences.

Ø    Other duties as needed.

THE LIBRARY: Shreve Memorial Library System is one of the largest
public library systems in Louisiana, with twenty-one branches and one
bookmobile.  The library system has a

combined holdings of over 665,000 items and an annual budget which
exceeds $18,000,000.  The library has a staff of 250 (169 FTE).  This
is an exciting time for our library,
as we come to the end of a planning process which will take the
library into new areas.

Shreveport (and sister city Bossier City) are two progressive cities
in Northwest Louisiana steeped in Southern style.  Shreveport and

BENEFITS: 12 days vacation/year (with increases every other year), 11

SUMMER 2011 STUDENT INTERNSHIPS AT THE BLM-ANASAZI HERITAGE CENTER,
DOLORES, COLORADO

The Anasazi Heritage Center (AHC) offers student internships in:
Curation and Visitor Services

Background: The Anasazi Heritage Center includes a main archaeology
gallery with artifact exhibits, a  replica pit house, touchable and
hands-on exhibits, computer-based explorations, a gallery for
temporary exhibitions, a movie theater, a room for special educational
programs, and a 100 seat theater. On the museum grounds are two 12th
century archaeological sites (the Dominguez and Escalante Pueblos) and
nature walk through pinon-juniper woodland to a 360° view of the
surrounding region (Mesa Verde, La Plata Mountains, Dolores River
Valley, and Sleeping Ute Mountain). The AHC staff also manages a
library, a conservation laboratory, and over 3.5 million artifacts,
samples, and original documents.

DATES: 8-12 consecutive weeks. Specific reporting and departure dates are

negotiable.
REIMBURSEMENT: $200 per week stipend paid twice monthly. Housing at a
communal, 3 bedroom house located on 6 acres adjacent to the Anasazi
Heritage Center. No travel reimbursement is available.


QUALIFICATIONS: Open to individuals with an interest in museum collections
management or curatorial activities. Applicants with prior background in
southwest archaeology, and collections management will be given preference.


UNIVERSITY CREDIT: College or university credit may be arranged depending
upon policy of university involved. AHC professional staff will supervise
credit procedures established by the intern and school.


JOB DESCRIPTION: The 2011 curation intern will be working in the AHC
archives and artifact collections from the Dolores Archaeological Project,
identifying documents, reports, photographs and artifacts from this project

for both gallery and on-line exhibits. In addition, the intern will assist
with various repackaging, reorganizing, and inventory projects of existing
collections at the AHC. This position offers a broad exposure to the

curatorial operations of a federal repository.


INTERNSHIP IN VISITOR SERVICES
 SUPERVISORS: David Kill, Visitor Services Coordinator LOCATION: Bureau of
Land Management, Anasazi Heritage Center, Dolores, Colorado.

DATES: 8-12 consecutive weeks, usually between March and September, but may
run in the winter. Specific reporting and departure dates are negotiable.
This position may include working weekends and some holidays.


REIMBURSEMENT: $200 per week stipend paid twice monthly. Housing at a
communal, 3 bedroom house located on 6 acres adjacent to the Anasazi
Heritage Center. No travel reimbursement is available.


QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants with a prior background in archaeology,

anthropology, or museum studies will be given preference. Interest and
experience in museum studies, and the ability to communicate with a wide
audience, are helpful.


UNIVERSITY CREDIT: College or university credit may be arranged depending

upon policy of university involved. AHC professional staff will supervise
credit procedures established by the intern and school.


JOB DESCRIPTION: Job responsibilities include daily operations of the
museum. This consists of opening and closing the museum's public areas,

working with front desk volunteers, providing visitor information about the
area and specifically about Canyons of the Ancients National Monument,
re-stocking and keeping interpretive materials and information pamphlets

up-to-date, maintaining hands-on exhibits in the Main Gallery, and
providing assistance with children's self-guided educational activities
(the Junior Explorer Program). Duties include providing 10-15 minute

introductory talks to adult tour groups upon their arrival at the Center,
and other duties as assigned.


This position also requires collecting entrance fees and staffing the front
desk when volunteers are absent, and assisting with cash register sales

operations in the museum shop.

Job Announcement: Map Cataloger Position

Wisconsin Historical Society Division of Library-Archives in Madison,
Wisconsin, is seeking two candidates for limited term, half-time,
twelve-month appointments, for a grant-funded map cataloging project.
The successful candidates will report to the Head of Cataloging and
Collections Management.

Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for creating original and
enhanced item-level MARC catalog records for our collection of maps
into OCLC and our integrated library system Voyager, an Ex-Libris
product. The cataloger will also create separate records for the
digitized version of the maps. The WHS map collection consists of
30,000 maps covering all of the United States. Many of them are rare
and historical in nature. The map cataloger will be responsible for
maintaining the highest possible level of quality in cataloging
practice consistent with WHS standards and the standards and policies
of the Library of Congress and the OCLC bibliographic utility. The Map
Cataloger will also survey the map collection, in conjunction with the
Conservator, to determine preservation issues.

Preferred Qualifications:

Masters in Library and Information Science;

One to two years of recent cataloging experience, including a
substantial amount of map cataloging, using AACR2R and other special
collections cataloging resources;

Experience using USMARC formats, Library of Congress rule
interpretations, LC subject headings and classification,
authority control;

Experience with integrated library systems, preferably Ex-Libris' Voyager;

Effective oral and written communication skills;
Ability to work as both independently and as part of a team;
Strong organization and time-management skills;

Attention to accuracy and detail is essential;

Knowledge of Wisconsin history and United States history.



Compensation:

Salary is $18.00/hour, 20 hours/week for 12 months.
