IMLS Fellowship: Increasing Diversity in Archives

The HistoryMakers is pleased to offer a year-long fellowship (June 6, 2011 through June 1, 2012) working in African American archives. This fellowship is made possible by a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The purpose of this fellowship program is to provide training for African American archivists and other archivists interested in working with African American archival collections. The year will include a 3-month immersion training program at The HistoryMakers Chicago location (June 6 - August 26, 2011) and an on-site residency (September 6, 2011 – June 1, 2012) at one of the following host institutions:

Metadata and Cataloguing Librarian

The University of Alberta Libraries, with a long tradition of service excellence to the University and its communities, seeks a dynamic individual for the position of Metadata and Cataloguing Librarian. Working within a team environment, the successful candidate will monitor, evaluate, recommend and apply established and emerging metadata schemes to information resources, and provide expertise and leadership in policy development relating to metadata for library resources.
    Responsibilities include providing metadata and cataloguing and classification of materials in various formats; monitoring developments in metadata standards and supporting technologies; analysis, design, implementation, and evaluation of metadata schemes for various types of electronic resources on library digitisation projects; evaluation and selection or design of tools to support metadata creation, harvesting and migration; acting as a system-wide resource and providing staff training and awareness relating to creation and use of catalogue records and other metadata; collaborating with appropriate staff in the development and application of techniques and measurements to assess the effectiveness of traditional and emerging metadata in meeting user
needs; liaising with consortial partners and other campus groups, including collaboration on projects; and participating, when appropriate, in regional, national and international initiatives to
promote shared development and use of metadata and its standards and practices.  Responsibilities may also include providing reference services and/or collection management/liaison services.
    Qualifications will include a Masters in Library Science degree from an accredited library school as well as substantial experience with AACR, LCSH, LC classification, MARC21, and library automated systems. Experience with emerging metadata schemes such as RDA, Dublin Core, MODS, MADS, METS, EAD, TEI, MARCXML and RDF is required, as well as knowledge of authority control systems, serials or digital resources cataloguing. Applicants must also possess a strong service orientation, the ability to work independently and as a team member in a dynamic environment, strong communication and organizational skills, aptitude for complex, analytical work with attention to detail, problem-solving skills, flexibility, the ability to prioritize work to ensure that
departmental and Library goals are realized, and the ability to work effectively in a production-oriented environment. Successful candidates will also be interested in and seek opportunities for conducting research and professional involvement.  Knowledge of one or more languages other than English is desirable.

General Description

SUNY Potsdam seeks a forward-looking, service-oriented, hands-on
archivist to provide leadership for the College Libraries' College
Archives and Special Collections in support of the teaching, research,
and preservation needs of the College community. Reporting to the
Director of Libraries, the College Archivist has overall responsibility
for the administration and management of the institutional records of
the College and its history, organizing and preserving these collections

and providing an array of reference services to a varied constituency.

SUNY Potsdam was founded in 1816, and is deeply proud of its status as
one of the 100 oldest continuously operating institutions of higher
education in the United States. The College Archives and Special
Collections at SUNY Potsdam represent the College's nearly 200 year
history, and an enthusiastic and energetic College Archivist will play a

key role in supporting the College's Bicentennial celebration due to
begin in the fall of 2015. The run-up to the Bicentennial is expected to

generate considerable interest and donations of college-related
historical materials from alumni and friends of the College, requiring
an agile and flexible approach to managing and accessioning new
materials.

The College Archives and Special Collections collect, preserve, and
document the College's history, and use our collections to support
instructional programs and research needs of the college community. The
College Archives contain papers, photographs, media, and selected
memorabilia relative to the history of SUNY Potsdam, including Potsdam
Normal (formed in 1869) and some material related to the earlier St.
Lawrence Academy, formed in 1816, as well as equivalent historic records

and materials relative to the Crane School of Music, birthplace of
American music education. Special Collections at SUNY Potsdam include
monographs focused on the history of Northern N.Y., Adirondack region,
St. Lawrence River and Seaway, and county histories of New York State,
as well as the papers of two Congressmen, Bertrand Snell and David
Martin. Some digitization has been accomplished; around 1200 photographs

have been scanned, and scanning of full runs of the student newspaper
and college yearbooks will be completed in 2010-2011.

This is a tenure-track faculty position, subject to criteria for
reappointment, promotion and tenure as established by the SUNY Board of
Trustees and described in the College's Faculty Handbook and the
Personnel Policies of the College Libraries. Faculty rank will be
determined based on the successful candidate's qualifications, with a
minimum salary of $45,000.

Job Responsibilities
- Appraises, accessions, arranges, describes, and processes archival
collections.
- Develops print and electronic access tools, and provides access to
online collections and services.
- Interacts with, directs, and assists researchers, donors, alumni, and
friends of the College.
- Engages in active educational outreach to faculty and students whose
research interests overlap with the holdings of the College Archives and

Special Collections, including but not limited to instruction to
students in use of the collections, supervision of academic
credit-bearing internships, and information literacy work with courses
for which the archives and special collections are integral to the
syllabus.
- Enhances and exploits the archival and special collections for the
purposes of research and the historical record as needed by the College
and the college community.
- Administrative responsibilities include planning, budgeting,
facilities management, as well as recruitment, evaluation, and
supervision of student employees, academic student interns, and
volunteers.

Required Qualifications
- Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program for library and
information-science or Master's degree in archival studies, history,
museum studies, or related discipline.
- A concentration or certification in archival studies.
- Demonstrated command of archival theory and practice, including
arrangement, description, and collection management processes for
archival materials.
- Demonstrated ability to appraise historical records.
- Knowledge of information technologies appropriate to special
collections and archives, and familiarity with database management, word

processing, spreadsheet software, and web-based applications and
technologies used in an archival environment.
- Familiarity with standards for metadata creation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:
- At least two years professional experience in an archival setting
- Demonstrated successful experience with project management
- Demonstrated experience creating finding aids
- Experience working with students, faculty, and alumni on individual
research projects.
- Experience working with donor communities and actively soliciting
appropriate donations of historic collections and materials.
- Proven ability to apply new technologies in information management.
- Ability to assist patrons with archival music material.
- Ability to work independently and to exercise discretion, initiative,
and judgment
- Ability to work harmoniously and effectively with others on a daily
basis
