Charles, the italics "O" means "order".  Hence as you refine the mesh the error decreases to "order" l^2 and the proportional sign can be replaced with equality by identifying a constant C as the multiplier.  Classic calculus.  AJB

Subject: Problem Set 1, question 9

Dr. Baker,

I've been working on the homework due Tuesday, and have a question. I'm not fully understanding the Taylor series truncation estimate. For e^h = O(l^2) = Cl^2, what does "O" represent? I'm interpreting that the problem is asking us to find the difference in the equations from HC-12. Am I understanding this correctly? Thanks.
