> The School of Information Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh is pleased to invite the public and members of the University community to participate in an informal discussion with David Ferriero, the Archivist of the United States.  The Archivist of the United States is the head of the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) and is appointed by the President of the United States. Ferriero, the 10th Archivist of the United States, was appointed to the position in November of 2009. This colloquium will take place on Wednesday, January 19, 2011 in Room 121 of David Lawrence Hall at the University of Pittsburgh.  The discussion will commence at 11:00 am and attendees are encouraged to bring topics and /or questions to drive the conversation.

> The NARA protects and preserves the records of the US Government, ensuring that people can discover, use, and learn from this documentary heritage. The agency ensures continuing access to the essential documentation of the rights of American citizens and the actions of their government. There are 36 NARA facilities across the United States, with approximately 3,000 full- and part-time employees.

> Prior to his appointment with the NARA, Mr. Ferriero served as the Andrew W. Mellon Director of the New York Public Libraries (NYPL). He was part of the leadership team responsible for integrating the four research libraries and 87 branch libraries into one seamless service for users, creating the largest public library system in the United States and one of the largest research libraries in the world. Before joining the NYPL in 2004, Mr. Ferriero served in top positions at two of the nation’s major academic libraries, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, MA, and Duke University in Durham, NC. Mr. Ferriero earned bachelors and master’s degrees in English literature from Northeastern University in Boston and a master’s degree from the Simmons College of Library and Information Science.
