University of Maryland’s iSchool Accepting Applications for Information and Diverse Populations Scholarship

 

College Park, MD (January 6, 2011)—The College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland, Maryland’s iSchool, is now accepting scholarship applications from highly qualified applicants to the new Information and Diverse Populations concentration of the Master of Library Science (MLS) program. Scholarships, funded through a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), will be awarded to a cohort of 20 full-time students to enter the concentration for the Fall 2011 semester.

 

Scholarship applicants must be legal residents of Maryland, Washington, DC, Virginia or West Virginia by August 2011. In addition to fulfilling the normal admission application requirements of the College of Information Studies (http://ischool.umd.edu/content/admission-1), students must also indicate that they wish to be considered for the scholarship and include a 2-3 page essay detailing their interest in the concentration and career plans. Scholarship essays should be sent directly to Cassandra Jones, Assistant Dean for Student Affairs and Information and Diverse Populations concentration co-coordinator, at [log in to unmask]. Applications are due by February 1, 2011.

 

The Information and Diverse Populations concentration is a unique track of study providing students with practical and analytical skills to provide information and technology services to diverse populations. In addition to specialized coursework, the concentration will include learning experiences and career-building activities such as:

 

·         Internships in partner public, academic and special libraries;

·         Mentoring and mentor training opportunities;

·         Travel funding to attend professional conferences related to issues of diversity;

·         Research opportunities within the iSchool;

·         Opportunities to publish book reviews on diversity-related topics in Library Quarterly; and

·         Participation in a University of Maryland workshop on diversity practice and research.

 

The Prince George’s County Memorial Library System, the University of Maryland’s McKeldin Library and the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Handicapped.
