Hello, We wanted to pass along information about the *Underrepresented Students in Topology and **Algebra** Research Symposium (USTARS)* that is coming up in April (see blurb below). We hope that you will pass this information along to your graduate students and encourage them to attend. We think it is a wonderful opportunity! There is limited funding available, and priority will be given to those students in your department who are able to find additional funding. * * *About the Symposium:* The University of Iowa mathematics department has received recognition for its outstanding minority mentoring program and has made a commitment to increase the number of minority graduate students and scientists. *The Underrepresented Students in Topology and Algebra Research Symposium (USTARS)* is a conference for graduate students proposed by a group of underrepresented students in the University of Iowa mathematics department and will be largely run and organized by graduate students. *The conference will be held at the **University of Iowa**, April 1-3, 2011*. It will be structured so that speakers give 20-minute parallel research talks with one distinguished graduate student giving a 1-hour presentation on Saturday and a mentoring brunch on Sunday. We have also invited Prof. Emille Davie Lawrence from Cal Poly Pomona to be our plenary speaker. The broader impact of this event is that graduate students who attend USTARS will be better equipped to find academic positions and continue the cycle of research and collaboration. For example, if your submission starts with "Please post this on the geometry list" then your conference announcement will also begin with that statement. In order to keep down the volume of e-mail, only TWO announcements per conference will be approved by the moderator. The "subject" of your message should include the name of the conference and the number (first or second) of the announcement, e.g. Gauss Memorial Lectures in Geometry: Second Announcement. Please check that your announcement (especially the website) is correct. Corrections will be approved only in the most critical situations, e.g. if corrected information is not available on the website. If you send a submission from an e-mail address that is not subscribed to the geometry list then you will be sent an e-mail asking for confirmation. This feature is designed to thwart the hundreds of machine-generated spam that are sent to the list and would otherwise have to be manually blocked by the moderator.
