The position is based in Cooperstown, NY, a beautiful setting on pristine Lake Otsego and the historic home of numerous nationally renowned cultural facilities between the Catskill Mountains and Mohawk Valley. A member of the senior management team, the Director of Development reports directly to the President/CEO. The position is responsible for all of the program, operating, and capital fundraising needs of these major cultural and historical institutions. The Director of Development leads the growth and expansion of a comprehensive fundraising program that consists of major gifts, planned giving, annual fund including membership and direct mail appeals, grant writing, corporate and foundation relations and sponsorships, government funding and special events. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following: lead all fundraising initiatives and programs; participate in institution-wide strategic planning; develop the annual appeal and related campaigns; maintain regular and sustained contact with trustees, association members and community leaders to ensure that the organizations’ missions and long-range goals are met; coordinate and oversee the efforts of a 4-person development team; create and manage the department’s budget; plan, develop and supervise annual and unique special events for fundraising purposes; collaborate with all departments on initiatives, projects and goals; other duties as necessary. The ideal candidate will have at least 7 years development experience in a museum or similar cultural organization, with a proven track record in all phases and aspects of fundraising, grant-writing and major gifts. Capital campaign experience is preferred; MA required. Excellent interpersonal, organizational and communications skills, and a high energy, proactive people-oriented approach are essential.
