OCLC is currently seeking candidates for a Diversity Fellowship Program (Research) position at our San Mateo, California office.

Responsibilities:

Within the Research Information Management (RIM) Program, the WorldCat Monograph Research Impact Study will use WorldCat holdings data to derive author impact data for faculty authors in a defined population. This will be a feasibility project to assess the viability of WorldCat holdings data to support bibliometric analysis of use to university libraries and research administrators.

In this study we shall use an existing dataset of author names which are associated with United Kingdom (UK) university departments, and will analyze this list in WorldCat to derive holdings counts for monograph publications for each author. These counts will then be aggregated at departmental level (individual authors will not be identified) to provide ratings which will be matched against extant Journal Impact Factors and other relevant bibliometrics to provide an alternative metric which will be assessed for their value as a substitute for or complement to existing metrics.

·         Compilation of the UK university author dataset via OCLC Research Library Partners who participated in the 2009 pilot scheme for the Research Excellence Framework in the UK. This will involve working with the European Director of the OCLC Research Library Partnership over access to the data.

·         Consideration and identification of other possible UK university author datasets that may be used in the study. Some UK universities have created comprehensive databases of publications produced by their faculty authors over the past 5-10 years, in anticipation of the next UK research assessment exercise (now called the ‘Research Excellence Framework’). Again, this will involve working with the European Director of the OCLC Research Library Partnership.

·         Unambiguous identification of author names with WorldCat author entries. This will involve working with Research Scientists in Dublin, Ohio.

·         Derivation of Monograph Author Impact ratings for all academic authors represented.

·         Aggregation of ratings to departmental level. This will involve matching of departments with the UK 2008 RAE categories in order to provide normalized ratings for comparison.

·         Comparison of departmental scores with published UK Research Assessment Exercise data from the 2008 exercise.

·         Report-writing and dissemination, in conjunction with Principal Investigator.

Qualifications

·         ALA-accredited MLS/MLIS degree (granted by July 2011)

·         Have less than three years post graduate work experience

·         Project management skills

·         Basic statistical analysis skills

·         Report writing skills

·         Familiarity with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, Outlook)

·         Demonstrated awareness and sensitivity in issues of diversity and inclusion:  strong awareness of other cultures and viewpoints, appreciation for the benefits of diversity in the workplace and library community, behavior which demonstrates the ability to work with people at all levels and from different backgrounds

·         Strong organizational skills which include the ability to organize work plans and processes toward a targeted outcome

·         Exceptional communication skills – written, oral, small group presentation

·         Selected individual must represent historically underrepresented groups (i.e., defined in a manner consistent with the 2007 EEO-1 race/ethnicity reporting classifications)

Salary and Benefits

·         Salary will be very competitive and commensurate with experience and applicable market compensation

·         The Fellow will be eligible for health & welfare benefits such as is provided to other similarly situated term-limited employees

·         Relocation Assistance will be offered in the form of a lump sum distributed in two installments (50% at signing of offer and 50% after 90 days of start date).  The amount of the lump sum will be determined by the distance required for relocation during the term of the fellowship
