The Georgetown University Library seeks a Head of Technical Services to lead, coordinate and administrate the Library’s Technical Services Department, encompassing Acquisitions, Electronic Resources/Serials, Cataloging/Metadata Services, and Bindery/Physical Processing.
Specific
Responsibilities:Plan,
coordinate and facilitate departmental activities and provide
leadership in formulating department goals and objectives. Administer the Department’s personnel
agenda, providing leadership and guidance in staff training and
development. Monitor
the Library’s materials budget; serve as the primary Technical Services
contact with acquisition vendors; establish and maintain business
relationships with vendors and assess vendor performance. Act as the chief technical resource for
catalog/bibliographic database; coordinate bibliographic practice among
units/departments within the Library, other main campus libraries and
local consortia.
Participate in the creation of the Library’s digital library
initiatives; coordinate the application of descriptive metadata schemas
for digitized and born-digital content managed by the Library and
develop strategies for metadata interoperability. Maintain liaison with other library
departments as well other main campus libraries; communicate and
coordinate technical services practices to library personnel within and
outside the department. Serve
as a member
of the library’s Leadership Council, sharing in policy-making decisions
and management responsibility for the Library as a whole.
Qualifications:
Master’s Degree in Library
Science from an ALA-accredited institution
or equivalent. Five years of successful, progressively responsible
professional
experience in technical services within an academic library setting;
Three
years supervisory and management experience; demonstrated knowledge of
acquisitions and/or cataloging/metadata, and experience with fund
accounting
and vendor relations; knowledge of current trends and new developments
in
technical services and digital library initiatives; ability to manage
multiple
departmental operations in a dynamic and changing environment.
Experience
working with metadata standards from the library and digital library
communities (e.g. Dublin Core, EAD, METS, MODS); Familiarity with data
interchange standards (e.g., OAI-PMH, SRW/U); knowledge of AACR2/MARC,
RDA and
FRBR; experience with integrated library systems, Innovative Interface
systems
preferred. Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communications
skills;
superior problem-solving and organizational skills. Record of
professional
accomplishments and commitment to ongoing development.
