The Charles Darwin Research Station is currently seeking a Volunteer
Librarian.
Time commitment: minimum 6 months; 12 months preferred.

The Corley Smith Library at the Charles Darwin Foundation and Research
Station (CDF) in Puerto Ayora, Santa Cruz, Galapagos, is a small, research
library that serves scientists, researchers, graduate students, National
Park officials and guides, and other visitors.

Collections include books, reports, a reprint collection of published
articles on Galapagos science and conservation, print and online journals,
photographs, slides, and archival document collections. An online catalog is
available locally, as well as a small reading room and one local staff
member. The library has access to OARE, BioOne and other literature
databases.

The Library relies on professionally-trained volunteer librarians to assist
in the management and operation of the library, and the general support and
training of local staff.

Responsibilities
1. Training local library staff on current library practices and procedures.
2. Providing reference services for visitors.
3. Cataloging and cleaning up bibliographic records (DDS) in the library
catalog.
4. Scanning photographs, slides, and older documents for an online archive.
5. Updating and improving the library website.
6. Identifying materials on Galapagos missing from the collection (books,
articles, theses).
7. Applying and enforcing basic preservation practices.
8. Improving library filing and record keeping procedures.
9. Assisting with the collection, description and citation management of
published articles on Galapagos.
10. Helping to maintain and expand online access to journal literature,
e-books, digital collections and other resources needed by CDF staff.
11. Other duties and projects as assigned.

Required profile
* Masters degree or at least one year of graduate-level training in library
and information science.
* Experience in library management and operations.
* Experience with the backend management of library catalogs.
* Experience with digitization projects, scanning and organizing digital
collections.
* Experience performing catalog and database searches of the scientific
literature.
* Fluency in English and at least basic Spanish.

Preferred
* Experience or training in managing archives collections including
photographs, slides, manuscripts, documents, and other unpublished
materials.
* A background in science, environmental studies or conservation.

The Executive Director will have at a minimum, five years demonstrated
successful experience as a leader and manager in an educational and/or
cultural institution, including experience in planning, budgeting,
financial and human resource management, external affairs,
fundraising, and educational programming, preferably in a complex
administrative environment.  Successful candidate will have produced
academic projects and publications involving cultural or historical
research both as individual and organizational efforts. Prefer
candidate with successful experience in museum project and staff
management.  He/She should have strong understanding and respect for
interdisciplinary activities, ethnic and cultural diversity, and the
origins, history, and character of pluralism in American life, as well
as a record of success in promoting cultural diversity and gender
equity in both programming and personnel.  Successful candidate will
have demonstrated the ability to communicate effectively with diverse
internal and external constituencies characteristic of the Institute
and the University as well as a successful record in securing
resources and private fund development.  Successful candidate will
have the motivation and commitment to enhance the statewide mission of
the Institute and its educational and cultural programming on behalf
of The University of Texas at San Antonio.

Description of Job Duties:
1. The administration and management of all Institute programs,
activities, and exhibits.
2. Leadership in educational programming and content production.
3. The dissemination of historical and cultural information to the
public and the schools.

4. The development and management of volunteer programs and fundraising.
5. Supervision of direct reports including the directors for museum
functions, including advancement, exhibits and collections, education
and interpretation, special events, and business operations.

6. Providing distinguished leadership to further enhance the
Institute's statewide educational mission as a vital resource to
strengthen and enhance the goal of The University in becoming a Tier
One institution.
