ELIGIBILITY

  Students enrolled in a university as candidates for the Ph.D. or

equivalent are eligible for predoctoral fellowships. By the time the

appointment begins, the university must approve the undertaking of

dissertation research at the Smithsonian Institution and certify that

requirements for the doctorate, other than the dissertation, have been

met.



FUNDING

 Financial support, in addition to a Smithsonian fellowship, for

such purposes as research travel and equipment may be received from

other sources provided that no special demands are made upon the

fellow's time. Permission to receive additional stipend support must

be requested in writing from the Office of Fellowships.  The term is

three to twelve months. Fellows will be provided with space to conduct

their research within the department in which they are working.

Applicants should consult in advance with their proposed advisor(s)

regarding the availability of facilities and necessary equipment. The

amount of support services available to the fellow will be determined

Subject: [archives] oral historian job announcement

University of South Carolina - Oral Historian

The South Caroliniana Library seeks a dynamic archivist with extensive
knowledge of the field of oral history to curate all relevant South
Caroliniana Library audio and video holdings. This position will be
responsible for developing and maintaining catalogs of such holdings,
as well as insuring their proper conservation and preservation. The
oral historian will also participate in projects designed to identify
narrators, research questions, and conduct interviews on topics
relevant

to the mission of the Library. This position will supervise student
and contract employees, interns and/or volunteers assisting with
curatorial work as well as the transcription and editing of
interviews. The oral historian will report to the Director of the
South Caroliniana Library.

   The University of South Carolina, founded in 1801, enrolls
approximately 20,500 undergraduate students and 6,500 graduate
students on the Columbia campus. University Libraries contains more
than 3 million volumes, 4 million microforms, 1 million manuscripts,
325,000 maps, and 944,000 government documents; and houses the
University's special collections. University Libraries is a member of
LYRASIS, OCLC, the Association of Research Libraries, and the Center
for Research

Libraries.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in a related field and two
years relevant professional experience; oral history experience;
in-depth knowledge of  media technologies; strong oral and written
communication skills; ability to work successfully as a member of
formal and informal teams. SLED background check is required.

Preferred Qualifications: Master's degree awarded from an
ALA-accredited library school and four years of professional
experience in oral history; demonstrated organization, analytical and
interpersonal skills; experience in an academic archive/library
setting.

Salary is dependent on qualifications and experience. Full-time,
12-month, unclassified, tenure-track, faculty status position with the

POSITION:  Archivist (12-Month Position)
           Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism

           University of Louisiana at Lafayette

QUALIFICATIONS:  Applicants must hold a minimum of a Bachelor's
degree. Familiarity with south Louisiana music, folklore, and history
is also essential. The Archivist will be employed in digitiing and
cataloging archives, as well as organizing and accessioning newly
acquired archival material. This entails conversion of archival
material from its donated format to the industry-standard storage
media using digital processing software. Applicants also should have
experience with mixing and mastering various forms of audio for
commercial release, proper setup of sound equipment, and also
maintenance of the equipment. Applicants must have experience in
restoration and maintenance of analog audio and videotape. Applicants
also should have experience in mixing live and pre-recorded
multi-track audio from both analog and digital formats using Pro-Tools
or any compatible modern recording software.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The Archivist must be well organized,
detail-oriented, and technology-savvy with the ability to troubleshoot
and repair equipment as needed. He or she will possess experience with
both Macintosh and IBM-compatible computers, analog to digital audio
and video conversion, multi-platform networking, and in establishing
and maintaining databases. The Archivist will also possess extensive
experience in the industry-standard programs used by the Center for
database management (Filemaker Pro), analog to digital audio and video
conversion (WaveLab, Sound Forge, iDVD, iTunes, Final Cut Pro, and
Peak) and knowledge of archival standards for restoration,
preservation, and storage. The applicant must also be familiar with
standard word processing and office administrative programs.

   In addition to archival work and cataloging, the applicant must be
able to collaborate with center fellows on various media projects,
coordinate fundraising efforts including grant writing, and conduct
fieldwork to enhance/create collections. He/she must also be available
for offsite instruction at schools, camps, conferences, and other
applicable institutions/events.

    The Center for Cultural and Eco-Tourism, established in 2001, is
one of the six Centers of Excellence on the University of Louisiana at
Lafayette campus. The Center enhances cultural and eco-tourism through
five avenues: its extensive online tourism guide, annual statewide
tourism conference, interaction and research of its fellows, fieldwork
and archival programming, and community outreach.

 Yellowstone National Park has position openings for three full-time,
term-funded project archivists to work in our Heritage and Research Center
located at the north entrance of the Park in Gardiner, Montana.

The successful candidates will be responsible for processing complex
collections of personal papers and historical records: appraising,
arranging, preserving, describing through written finding aids, and
cataloging the collections into a collection management system and shared
library catalog.   The archivists will also survey and reappraise
collections, conducting research into provenance and making recommendations
for retention, processing, and preservation.
