Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature

Featured student: Will McNabb

Will McNabb is majoring in materials science and engineering. He accepted a co-op with Flint Group in Arden, N.C., working the Spring and Summer 2010 semesters back-to-back, and scheduled to return for his third rotation during the Summer 2011 semester. He offered the following information toward the end of his first rotation:

“I worked in the technology department. My responsibilities included researching and improving adhesion, durability and overall quality of printing blankets and sleeves.

“I learned several lab tests and techniques, as well as how to operate some of the equipment … Projects are real engineering projects and not just grunt work…It is a fun and challenging place to work!”

New technical skills McNabb said he learned during the assignment included: reading P&ID drawings, lab equipment, Tabor abrasion, tensile, ply adhesion, microhardness, heat and UV curing, mixing techniques, swell, and power transfer.

A challenge McNabb said he overcame was “learning how to speak up in group discussions. I solved it by continuously going to meetings [and learned] how to voice my opinion and ideas.”

He said the most valuable benefit he received from accepting the co-op was, simply, “experience.”

Students may read more about their peers’ co-op/internship experiences by logging into their Engineering Professional Practice profile via www.coop.utk.edu, clicking “Resource Library” (on the left margin) and selecting “Students at Work – In Their Own Words.”
