Metadata Management Librarian

The George Washington University Libraries announces a search for a Metadata
Management Librarian

Position: Metadata Management Librarian

Appointment Rank: Appointment at the rank of Librarian I (entry level;
minimum salary $47,000) or Librarian II (minimum 2 years experience; minimum
salary $50,600). Rank and salary depend on qualifications and experience.
This is a full-time 12 month, salary and benefits will commensurate with
experience and qualifications of the person selected.

Position Description: Under the direction of Resource Description
Coordinator, the incumbent is a member of Resource Description Group (RDG)
and the greater cataloging group within The George Washington University
Libraries.  The RDG is one of four units within Content Management
Department, a part of the Library’s Division of Digital Initiatives and
Content Management. The RDG is responsible for describing and providing
access to library collections including serial and monographic content in
all formats.

Responsibilities:
- Performs original and complex metadata creation for all formats--print and
non-print-- that the Library collects.
- Takes an active role in training, works closely with, and supervises
paraprofessionals in a futuristic, fast paced and production-driven
environment by taking full advantage of available metadata, helper
applications, and emerging technology to augment, enhance and reuse the
resource description for access to Library collections.
- Assumes a leadership role in designing, implementing and conducting
training, resource description, data analysis for all Library projects
where metadata is the essential component, including but not
exclusively, manuscripts, archival materials, and digital content
acquired from the Special Collections Research Center and other
sources.

Participates in Library planning, serves on Library, University-wide
and Washington Research Library Consortium committees.

The George Washington University librarians are expected to be active
in librarianship, contribute to developments in the field and perform
additional duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
ALA-accredited Masters in library/information science, or its
equivalent
Minimum 2 or 3 years experience in an academic library, museum,
archive, or a comparable environment
Experience in creating, editing, and transforming non-MARC metadata,
such as EAD or others.
Demonstrated knowledge in basic organizational, descriptive, structural
metadata standards and best practices, such as RDA, AACR, DACS, DCRM(B),
MARC21, Dublin Core, MODS, etc., thesauri, controlled vocabulary,
identity disambiguation

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience in using OCLC Connexion and an integrated library system,
preferably Voyager
Familiarity with UNIX or LINUX operating systems
Familiarity with related XML technologies such as XSLT
Familiarity with one scripting or similar programming languages
Experience in using open source tools and/or free software such as
MarcEdit
Working knowledge of at least one modern Western European language
Familiarity with metadata creation for manuscripts, archival, rare and
special collections materials
One to three years of original cataloging or metadata creation
experience in a variety of formats
Experience with producing reports using MS Access or a similar
reporting application
Excellent analytical, problem-solving skills, and computer skills,
including project management
Effective oral, written communication and interpersonal skills

Position Available:  Position is open until filled.  This is a full-time,
twelve-month, tenure-system faculty appointment.  Rank at the level of
Associate or Full Professor of Library Administration with tenure, depending
on the qualifications of the candidate selected.  The librarian appointment
is permanent, but all current unit head appointments in the University
Library are five-year, renewable terms. The successful candidate must meet
requirements for tenure at the University of Illinois, which includes
expectations for librarianship, research and service.



Duties and Responsibilities:  Reporting to the University Librarian, the
Head of the International and Area Studies (IAS) Library will provide
leadership for, and supervision, of library services to students, faculty,
and other scholars using resources in international and areas studies.  This
is an opportunity to lead reshaping international and area studies services
to users in a major university research library which is involved in
rethinking library services through a “new service model” process (

<http://www.library.illinois.edu/nsm/>). The vision of the IAS Library is to
be University's gateway to the world of information and scholarship about
international, global, and area studies which are distinct and complementary
scholarly projects. The gateway will connect the knowledge that is crucial
to developing global competencies through the study of global concerns and
transnational issues as well as the study of distinct nations and regions.



The successful candidate will:

•         Provide leadership for the successful integration of personnel and
core activities supporting collections and public services into the new
International and Area Studies (IAS) Library;

•         Oversee operations and establish priorities for core services in
the IAS Library, including reference service, collection development and
management, liaison, outreach, instruction, and support for digital
scholarship;

•         Collaborate collegially and cooperatively with other personnel in
the IAS Library, other unit heads, the AUL for Services, and the AUL for
Collections;

•         Communicate with campus constituent groups such as International
and Area Studies Centers, and user communities;

•         Evaluate/coach/mentor personnel;

•         Direct the selection, training, evaluation, and deployment of
support staff members and graduate assistants/hourly staff in IAS Library;

•         Prepare regular and on-demand reports for the IAS Library,
including but not limited to strategic plans, annual goals, annual reports,
and budget proposals and requests;

•         Provide collection development, reference service, and
bibliographic instruction for general international areas.  Depending upon
departmental needs and qualifications of the successful candidate, duties
may also include regional area specialization responsibilities;

•         Coordinate IAS web site management, digital projects, development
and management of additional collections, specific library programs and
operations, and participate in other projects and activities;

•         Perform other related duties as assigned.



Qualifications:  Required:  Experience leading and managing in an academic
or research environment , particularly in area studies, social sciences, or
humanities; Advanced degree in relevant discipline ; Experience providing
information and research services and instruction in an academic or research
environment; Knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic library
services and resources; Evidence of research, publication, and service to
meet university standards for tenure Preferred: Progressively responsible
professional experience in academic or research library setting, with a
commitment to user-centered services; ALA-accredited Master’s degree or
equivalent; Experience working with international or area studies programs
and services; Demonstrated knowledge of relevant trends in digital
libraries, the social aspects of information, and scholarly communications;
Experience in building and sustaining library collections in all formats;
Knowledge of one or more non-!

Salary and Rank: Salary commensurate with credentials and experience, and
will include an administrative component for the five-year renewable
appointment as unit head.  Rank at the level of Associate or Full Professor
of Library Administration with tenure, depending on the qualifications of
the candidate selected.  Librarians have faculty rank, and must demonstrate
excellence in librarianship, research, publication, and
university/professional/community service in order to meet university
standards for tenure and promotion.
