Geography 309 -- Geographies of Con?ict

Why does conflict arise? Where is it likely to occur? Who engages in conflict? How does it change over time? How can conflict end? What happens to places and people during/after conflict?

This class explores the manifestations of human conflict at different scales ranging from local to the global. Topics will include how human territoriality leads to conflict; genocide as a technology of con?ict; globalization's role in promoting and suppressing con?ict; how conflict changes places and their inhabitants; and how conflict over territory and resources can be avoided or resolved.

We will engage in a comprehensive overview of conflict and its many geographies. The subject matter will be examined through key readings including Samantha Power's seminal A Problem from Hell: America and the Age of Genocide, a winner of the Lukas Book Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for Non-Fiction. Each reading will be engaged through a geographical perspective.

This class should have broad appeal to geography students interested in politics, policy, and human rights as well as history, anthropology, political science, women's studies, psychology, and other social science disciplines.
