To Geography majors:

In Spring 2011 I will teach a graduate course in Geographies of Labor (GEOG 509), and this class is open to interested majors in Geography. The course will extend topics from courses in Economic Geography, regional courses in Geography of Asia and Europe, and Population Geography. If you enjoyed learning about topics in these courses you may be interested in taking this course.

Some of the topics that we will discuss include factory workers in China, information technology specialists in India, low-skilled workers in London, domestic workers in Canada, migrant workers in the United States, and the international migration of nurses and doctors. We will discuss global inequalities in working conditions, international labor regulations, and international organizations that try to improve working conditions globally.

The course will be taught as a seminar, with weekly readings and class discussions. Each student will write short weekly responses on Blackboard, give one class presentation, and write a final paper.

The course will count for a 300- or 400-level course for the geography major, or you can petition to count the course as a Foreign Studies option if you are a senior. Foreign Studies courses fill up quickly and this course may be an interesting option. I would be happy to meet with interested students to advise how this course would satisfy requirements for the major.

Class will be held on Tuesdays from 5:10 pm to 7:45 pm in BGB 406.
