Dr. Diane Barlow to Step Down as Associate Dean of Maryland’s ISchool

College Park, MD (10/15/10)--Dean Jennifer Preece has announced that Dr. Diane Barlow will step down from the position of Associate Dean of the University of Maryland’s College of Information Studies at the end of Spring semester 2011. Dr. Barlow joined the College of Information Studies in 1990 and was promoted to Associate Dean in 2000. Focusing on the continued improvement and growth of the College’s academic programs, she was instrumental in the design and development of the Master of Information Management program, which began in 2003, and the Master of Human-Computer Interaction program, which will begin in 2011; led the successful American Library Association (ALA) reaccreditation effort for the Master of Library Science program in 2006; planned and implemented the iSchool @ Shady Grove initiative, the first off-campus degree program for the iSchool; and worked in or led many other academic review and improvement projects. She has served the University of Maryland through membership on various committees, including the Academic Planning Advisory Committee (APAC), and is currently a member of the Council of Associate Deans for Graduate Education. Her professional service has included membership on the Board of the Association for Library and Information Science Education (ALISE), as well as association committees and membership on External Review Panels for the Committee on Accreditation of ALA. She is co-conference chair for Library Research Seminar V, hosted by the iSchool October 6-9, 2010.

Dr. Barlow will remain at the iSchool as a faculty member with selected administrative responsibilities in addition to teaching and research. She will continue research into questions relating education for the information professions to the current status of practice, market needs for information professionals, and measures of professional success. Dr. Preece said, “I want to thank Diane for her many transformative contributions to the iSchool and for giving us advance notice of her plans so that we can chart a smooth transition. “
