Director of the School of Library and Information Science
The University of Iowa invites
nominations and applications for the position of Director of the School of
Library and Information Science. The
School offers an ALA-accredited M.A. in Library and Information Science
delivered by a rapidly emerging, dynamic, and diverse faculty in a collegial
and collaborative department. The incoming director will set the agenda for a
department with great potential for growth and impact. This role requires leadership, excellent
communication skills, and a strategic vision for the field of library and
information science.
The School’s distinctive campus
profile reflects connections to multiple campus programs and departments, as
well as evolving strengths. The Director will support faculty engaged in
interdisciplinary projects and partnerships, which include the Virtual Writing
University, the UI Center for the Book, the Project on the Rhetoric of Inquiry,
the Institute for Clinical and Translational Science, the eGranary
Digital Library promoting global information access, and the UI Libraries.
School faculty are actively involved in the Informatics Ph.D. program. Recent grants totaling almost $2 million have
established tracks in digital librarianship and school media. The School is
physically located in the UI Main Library and reports to the Dean of the
Graduate College. Additional information

This position is part of a cluster
initiative in Public Humanities in a Digital World. All positions in this
initiative require interest in engaging collaboratively with communities and
organizations across and outside the university. New hires under this
initiative will actively participate in exploring
the role of digital practices on the production of scholarship and creative
work in projects central to the humanities.
The Director of SLIS will participate in this initiative as a
scholar and support the efforts of faculty already involved.
The University of Iowa is located in
Iowa City, a cosmopolitan community of 80,000 with excellent public schools,
affordable housing, a world-class medical center, and exceptional cultural and
recreational activities. The campus of
100 buildings on 900 acres is situated along both banks of the Iowa River,
adjacent to an attractive city center.
The position requires a Ph.D. in
Library and Information Science or a related field. Successful candidates will
have established records in scholarship and instruction, qualifying for a
tenured appointment, and be able to demonstrate job-related experience with
and/or commitment to diversity in the work/academic environment. Salary is
highly competitive, and with rank, will be commensurate with qualifications.
