Simmons GSLIS invites applicants and
nominations for a full-time tenure-track
position at the Assistant or Associate
Professor level in the area of School Libraries.
Simmons College was chartered in 1899
and opened in 1902; the Graduate School of
Library and Information Science
(GSLIS) began with the College. The current School
Library Teacher Program began as the
School Library Media Specialist Program in
1971. Today, GSLIS has nearly 800
students on two campuses, some 50 of whom are
in our PhD program. A top-ten ranked
program in U.S. News & World Report,
GSLIS attracts students from all over
the United States and the world. Alumni hail
from every state and over 80
countries. The program is a dynamic environment for
research and learning. Faculty receive
grants from a diverse array of federal agencies
and private foundations.
Requirements: Teach, conduct research,
contribute to developing curriculum, and
provide service to the College and the
information professions.
In addition, responsibilities will
include teaching graduate courses taken as a part of
the Master's Degree with a
concentration in the School Library Teacher Program
including the role of instructional
technology and its integration into 21st Century
school libraries. The successful candidate
will also have an active role in advising
master's and Ph.D. students;
supervising graduate pre-practicum, practicum, and
internship experiences at K-12 school
placements; and participating in professional
organizations at the state and
national levels focused on school librarianship and
instructional technology.
Preference will be given to applicants
who have already earned a doctoral degree in
library and information science or in
an appropriate related field in K-12 education;
have demonstrated knowledge of, and
experience in, instructional technology and its
integration into the curriculum in
K-12 education; have a minimum of five years of
full-time experience as a public
school library teacher in grades K-12; have
demonstrated excellence in teaching
students in grades K-12; have experience and
expertise in the development of K-12
curriculum; have knowledge of, and experience
with, the development of inquiry-based
learning and 21st Century skills; have the
ability to model and teach effective
teaching practices; have demonstrated excellence
in teaching at the graduate school
level; shown ability to work collaboratively and to
work with diverse populations; have a
potential for excellence in research; and have
shown the potential for leadership in
scholarship and professional service.
Salary is negotiable, commensurate
with experience and qualifications.
Opportunities to teach include: both
Master's and doctoral level courses; summer
semester; continuing education institutes;
and at the GSLIS program at the Mount
Holyoke College campus in South
Hadley, Massachusetts. Simmons College
