Don’t be a phish! We’ve all gotten these messages from time to time - an email that looks like it came from a reputable source: the HelpDesk, a social networking site, your bank - but it has a link in it and you’re told to click the link. Or, you might be asked to reply and "confirm your password," open the attached document for a special mortgage interest rate, or something similar. These are all popular scams to get you to give up your login credentials for the University, your banking website, or social networking sites, in order to violate your identity or spread malware. Many scams today use multiple tricks to fool you into following their directions. Hackers have become very talented at crafting emails that look just like the real thing, and they even employ people to proofread their English, since poor grammar was once the hallmark of spam. In Information Technology, we call this Phishing. The simple rules to avoid being scammed are simple. The HelpDesk will NEVER ask you for your password by phone or email, period, end of story. Neither will your bank, Facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn or any other reputable entity. Don’t give your password away! NEVER click links in emails that you have not personally verified with the person who sent the email - even if it looks like your mother sent you a link. If you weren’t expecting to receive that email, call her up and ask her if she sent it. NEVER click links in emails asking you to "log in here," even if the text of the link looks correct. It is a simple matter to hide the real destination of a link behind otherwise legitimate-looking text. NEVER open attachments unless you are expecting them from the person who sent them or have verbally verified that they are legitimate. Email attachments are still one of the most popular vectors for spreading viruses, trojans, and other malware. Most malware today is designed to steal banking or other site login credentials for the purpose of monetary or identity theft. DO contact the HelpDesk at 974-9900 or help.utk.edu if you believe you have fallen prey to one of these scams. For additional information about Phishing, check out the OIT Phishing page. In addition, this facility cannot be reserved as a class venue on a semester-long basis, only for specific, individual sessions scheduled in advance.
