Audience Research and Evaluation Department

The Audience Research and Evaluation department at Shedd Aquarium conducts market research, evaluates exhibits/programs and tracks Shedd Aquarium’s progress in order to improve practices/exhibits/programs, better serve visitors and convey the Shedd Aquarium’s mission.  .

 

Lead Evaluation Assistant (1 position available)

The Lead Evaluation Assistants work together to oversee the Evaluation Assistants, as well as handle the logistical details of projects and management of data. 

Position requires an understanding of the museum visitor experience, a concern for accuracy and great attention to detail. 

           

The work requires excellent oral and written skills, the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team. Friendly demeanor, optimistic attitude and energetic personality are a must!

 

 

Schedule:        Part-time regular position; 9am-5pm weekdays and 10am-4pm on Saturday/Sunday

                        2-3 days (16-24 hours) each week

                        Flexible schedule.  Tuesdays and one other weekday required.  Some weekend days.

                       

Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities:

Project and staff management

A specific data collection protocol is developed according to the requirements of each project, including time considerations and goals for total numbers.  The Leads train, schedule and supervise part time workers and volunteers for data collection and entry. 

 

·            Develops project timeline and data goals/targets; monitor deadlines

·            Schedules staff for data collection and data entry

·            Trains staff and volunteers on protocols, data collection/entry

·            Supervises data collection/entry (including digital)

·            Some data collection and entry

 

Data management and analysis

The Leads manage the data from a wide range of projects, from small, quick, discrete studies to multi-year complex projects.  Data can be qualitative or quantitative, originating from various print, media and digital/electronic (SNAP or Noldus) methods.  The Leads are responsible for implementing data protocols and data management related trainings.

 

·            Sets up databases per established protocols

·            Develops and tests data collection instruments (including new electronic methods of data collection: SNAP and Noldus)

·            Supervises cleaning of database and export to statistical program (SPSS)

·            Conducts analysis of data and prepares internal reports

·            Prepares files for archiving

 

Other

·            Participate in planning meetings, presentations of results and discussions of findings

·            Attend all-staff meetings, workshops and/or other professional development opportunities

 

Position Specifications:

EDUCATION

·             Bachelor’s degree or higher in museum studies, education, marketing, social sciences or a related field.

 

EXPERIENCE

·             Two years of experience in survey research, museum programs or related work

·             Experience with both quantitative and qualitative approaches to data collection and analysis

·             Competency in Word, Excel and SPSS

 

UNUSUAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

·           Must be able to stand and move quickly through the public areas of the building, including stairs, for several hours.

 Evaluation Assistant (4 positions available)

Evaluation Assistant responsibilities include administering surveys and questionnaires, conducting observations, and interviewing visitors. 

 

Applicants must enjoy interacting with guests and be comfortable approaching guests for interviews or distributing questionnaires.  A concern for accuracy and great attention to detail are required.  An understanding of the museum visitor experience is a plus.

           

The work requires good oral and written skills, the ability to work independently, as well as part of a team. Friendly demeanor, optimistic attitude and energetic personality are a must!

 

 

Schedule:        Part-time, temporary for six months (October 2010 through March 2011) with a possibility for renewal

·               4 - 8 shifts a month (weekdays and weekends available)

·               5 - 8 hours a day

Systems/Emerging Technologies Librarian, Wesleyan University Library, Middletown, Connecticut

Reporting to the University Librarian, this position provides dynamic leadership in the design, implementation and maintenance of user-centered library technology services at Wesleyan University Library and in the CTW Consortium, with partners Connecticut College and Trinity College. The person in this position will work collaboratively with a variety of library, campus, consortial and other partners to maintain and upgrade existing library systems and to develop new applications.

Responsibilities include:

Leading library systems and technology initiatives
- Keeps current on emerging technologies and library processes, developing new applications to enhance services. Works collaboratively with library and ITS staff, other campus constituencies, and CTW consortial partners to explore promising ideas.
- Leads projects to design and implement new library systems and applications.
- Designs and implements enhanced library services and processes using new technologies.
- Finds effective ways to integrate existing library systems with third party applications and services such as those provided by Google, OCLC and others.

Maintaining and supporting existing library systems and technology
- With ITS, leads the continuing development of WesScholar, Wesleyan's online archive of University-related content.
- Coordinates the maintenance, repair, and upgrade of library and CTW consortial online systems (including Voyager, SerialsSolutions, EZProxy, ERES, Illiad, ARIEL, and Digital Commons).
- Extracts needed data from library systems, producing statistical reports for a variety of purposes.
- Supervises the Information Services Technician, who evaluates, replaces and maintains library hardware, performs data loads of bibliographic, patron, billing and other records, troubleshoots staff computer problems, and oversees student technology consultants in the Olin Library Information Commons.

Collaborating with campus, consortial and professional partners
- Serves as liaison to ITS and other on-campus constituencies to automate and troubleshoot data sharing, and evaluate and implement new campus systems.
- Participates in providing core library services such as reference, collection development and library instruction.
- Participates in University initiatives and committees, particularly those concerning technology, informatics and content management.
- Chairs the CTW Consortium Operating Committee, which works with the CTW Library Directors to determine future directions in consortial system development.
- Acts as contact to such off-campus partners as library automation vendors, Oberlin Group peers, open access programmers, and others.
- Participates in professional activities at regional and national levels.

Minimum qualifications: MLS degree from an accredited library school and 3-5 years experience working in an academic library. Project management experience and demonstrated success in working collaboratively with a variety of constituencies. Detailed understanding of MARC and other metadata schemas. Experience managing integrated library systems, preferably Voyager or another Oracle/Unix-based system, including reporting tools. Demonstrated knowledge of codes, standards and rules used to organize data in library systems, and familiarity with internal library operations and workflows. Demonstrated experience with Oracle SQL, UNIX/Linux, XML, XSLT, and scripting languages such as PHP, JavaScript, and PERL. Record of regional or national professional engagement.

Preferred qualifications: A minimum of one year's experience doing reference work in an academic library. Participation in the development of an institutional repository or other digital content management system. Familiarity with open source applications (for example, VuFind) for use in libraries. Experience in a culturally diverse liberal arts institution. Experience preparing successful grant proposals and coordinating grant-funded projects.
