It's Family Weekend Time in Tennessee!

Fall Family Weekend is a few short days away and we look forward to seeing nearly 800 families and over 3,000 guests this weekend! Please remember to pick up your Family Weekend packet, football tickets (if purchased through Family Weekend registration) and t-shirts on Friday, September 24 between 4:00-7:00 PM in the University Center. Your student can pick up your packet as well. Parking is available to parents in the University Center Parking Garage at a reduced rate and payment can be made as you exit the Parking Garage. On Saturday, the Big Orange Tailgate Party will be from 9:00-11:30 AM and kickoff for the UT vs. UAB football game is set for 12:21 PM!

During Family Weekend, participants will have the opportunity to bid on the more than 100 items in the 2nd Annual Family Weekend Silent Auction. Proceeds from the Auction benefit student scholarships and parent and student programming through the Parents and Families Fund. For a preview of items up for bid, click here.

How to Work a Job Fair

Career Services will host this informative workshop designed to prepare your student to interact with employers in a career fair setting on Thursday, September 23, 2010 from 4:00-5:00 PM in the University Center Shiloh Room. Students will hear from employers about career fair "do's and don'ts" and how best to prepare for a job fair to make a great first impression. For more information, click here.

Fall Job Fairs

For students interested in a career in logistics or supply chain management, Career Services is hosting the Logistics Job Fair on Monday, September 27, 2010 from 4:00-6:00 PM in Thompson-Boling Arena. Interested students can log in to Hire-A-Vol for a list of employers attending the fair and the types of positions available and can also submit their resume to employers in advance through the RSVP feature.

The Fall Job Fair, Career Services' largest event of the year, will take place on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 from 2:00-6:00 PM in Thompson-Boling Arena. Corporate employers, government agencies, and non-profit organizations will be on hand recruiting students for full-time entry-level positions and/or internships. Students can log in to Hire-A-Vol, Career Services' Job Placement Database for a list of employers attending the fair, types of positions available and desired majors and can also submit their resume to employers in advance through the RSVP feature.

Students should dress professionally for both events and bring multiple copies of their resume. Click here to visit the Career Services website for more information.

Fall 2010 Study Abroad Fair

The Fall 2010 Study Abroad Fair will take place on Wednesday, September 29 in the University Center Ballroom from 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM. Students are encouraged to go by the fair to get information on semester, academic year, summer and mini-term programs, explore internships, and speak with UT faculty leading summer and mini-term programs. Students can also learn about scholarships and financial aid for study abroad and talk to UT students who have studied abroad. Click here for more information.

2011 Emerging Leaders Applications Available

The Office of Student Orientation and Leadership Development is now accepting applications for the 2011 Emerging Leaders Course! Emerging Leaders is a three credit-hour leadership course taught every spring for a select group of sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in studying leaders, leadership theories, and the application of leadership in a variety of situations. The Emerging Leader Class will meet throughout Spring 2011 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11:10 AM - 12:25 PM. For more information and the application, click here.

Aspiring Entrepreneurs Get Help, Win Prizes at UT's "Vol Court"

Does your student have a seed of an idea but need help getting it to grow? The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is once again providing students, faculty, and friends the opportunity to learn from entrepreneurs and business experts from across the state on how to start a business and win a prize to kickstart its growth. "Vol Court" is a series of one-hour workshops focusing on how to start a business. They begin on Tuesday, September 21. The final session will be a pitch competition where the top two presenters or teams will win cash prizes and valuable business services. For more information, click here.

MyUTK and Spring 2011 Timetable of Classes Now Available

The new Banner Student Information System and MyUTK went live on Monday, September 20. MyUTK is the new, one-stop-shop for UT Faculty, Staff and Students and can be found at https://myutk.utk.edu/. The Spring 2011 timetable will be available by visiting the A-to-Z section of the UT Knoxville webpage by clicking here, clicking the letter "T" and searching for "Timetable of Classes." Students can begin registering for classes on Thursday, September 30, in the new system. Circle Park Online, http://cpo.utk.edu, will continue to be available for all other current term functions through December.

Upcoming Scholarship Information Sessions

The Office of National Scholarships and Fellowships informs and mentors students who wish to apply for nationally competitive scholarships and fellowships. The ONSF works with students as early as their first year to begin preparing to apply for prestigious post-graduate scholarships such as the Rhodes, Marshall, and Fulbright. They also administer the university nomination process for highly competitive undergraduate scholarships. Students interested in applying for these scholarships are strongly encouraged to attend the upcoming information sessions:

Goldwater Scholarship (for sophomores and juniors pursuing a career in research in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering) on Wednesday, September 22 at 4:00 PM in F301 Melrose Hall.

Truman Scholarship (for top-performing juniors interested public service) on Wednesday, September 29 at 4:00 PM in F301 Melrose Hall.

Udall Scholarship (for green-minded sophomores and juniors interested in careers related to the environment) on Wednesday, October 13th at 4:00 PM in F301 Melrose Hall.

Important Announcement from the Bursar's Office

The Fall 2010 Deferred Payment due date is Friday, October 1, 2010 at 4:30 PM. If fees are not paid in full, the student's account will be placed on hold and each student will be subject to late fees. Arts and Sciences Pre-Game Showcase

The College of Arts and Sciences continues its Pre-Game Showcase series this week on Saturday, September 25, and will feature Laura Howes, Associate Professor in the Department of English, and Interim Director of the is entitled "The Bible Tells Me So: The Politics of Biblical Interpretation." Each presentation is free and open to the public and begins two hours prior to kick-off in the University Center Ballroom. Complimentary light refreshments are provided. .

AG Day 2010

Join UT's Institute of Agriculture for a fun and festive Ag Day Street Fair. With the theme "Lean and Green," events start at 8:21 AM on Saturday, September 25. The institute will present information on our activities related to health, well-being, efficiency and sustainability. Activities include: An insect petting zoo, live music, current and former professors, a visit from UT's mascot Smokey, an antique tractor display, free popcorn and ice cream, a meal available for purchase from the Student Livestock Association, information on the Tennessee Bioenergy Programs, tours of the College of Veterinary Medicine and UT Gardens, a moonwalk, face painting and balloon art, and much more! UT Receives Homeland Security Grant for Neyland Stadium Cameras

Officials from the Tennessee Department of Safety and the state and federal Department of Homeland Security (DHS) joined officials from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, on Wednesday to announce a $196,000 DHS grant for the purchase and installation of additional closed-circuit security cameras at Neyland Stadium.
