University of Alberta Announces Director, School of
Library and Information Science
Edmonton, AB, August 23, 2009 – The University of
Alberta has appointed Ernie Ingles to the position of Director, School of
Library and Information Studies (SLIS), effective August 20, 2010.
Ingles has served the University of Alberta for twenty
years in a variety of increasingly responsible positions, most recently as Vice
Provost and Chief Librarian. He has published frequently, including seminal
reference tools and library human resource capacity studies, and is a sought
after speaker at conferences and related events. He has been the recipient of
numerous awards and professional honors, and in 2001 was elected as a Fellow of
the Royal Society of Canada. A key contribution to the profession was his
founding of the now renowned Northern Exposure to Leadership Institute.
“Recognizing Ernie’s reputation for
collaboration and innovation, the University has given him a strong mandate to
work with the faculty, staff and other relevant stake holders of the School of
Library and Information Science to build upon achievement—to secure a
future for the School and for its current and future students, in an exciting,
but volatile, library and information science landscape,” said Carl
Amrhein, Provost and Vice-President (Academic) at the U of A.
Ernie will retain his current responsibilities as
Vice-Provost, and will retain over arching accountability for University of
Alberta Libraries within the Learning Services portfolio.
Ingles has enthusiastically accepted the challenges of
the directorship, “I strongly believe that the School of Library and
Information Science will soon come to exceed the expectations of the internal
communities to which it contributes, and the external communities which it
serves.”
