Polytechnic Institute invites applications for the position of Research
and Instruction Librarian, who will report to the Associate Director
for Research and Instruction Services. Founded in Worcester, Mass., in
1865, WPI was one of the nation's earliest technological universities.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Research and Instruction Librarian
BASIC FUNCTIONS: Collaborates with WPI faculty staff and the Research and Instruction
team to advance technology-enhanced instruction by design, development
and delivery of electronic learning and online tutorials to meet
information literacy and related outcomes. Provides research and
instruction services to the WPI community, incorporates appropriate
technologies, skills, innovations, and collaborations as needed into
instructional program; supports academic library departments as a
library liaison, provides research education services and current
information on library resources and services both in-person and online.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Designs, develops, and delivers e-learning and online tutorials for the library’s research education program.
- Supports judicious and appropriate use of the library’s subscribed
information resources and assists in providing access to
course-specific instructional materials in online environments.
- Designs, develops and provides research consultations and
orientations; including virtual research orientations and consultations
for distance learners.
- Manages online research education documentation, including library
web site in collaboration with the Associate Director for Technology
and E-Resource Management.
- Maintains awareness of best practices and trends, including emerging
technologies, in academic library reference service, and implements
practices, as appropriate.
- Participates with collection development and evaluation of electronic resources.
- Participates in the research education program, provides library
resources training sessions and research consultations to courses such
as interdisciplinary and senior-level project teams and first year
Great Problem Seminars
- Coordinates e-learning and online tutorial assessment efforts with
others in the Research and Instruction team and in collaboration with
faculty and Access Services staff.
- Provides extensive searching for complex Interlibrary Loan borrowing requests.
- Participates in the Academic Technology Center/Library Liaison Program.
- Participates in professional development as appropriate.
- Contributes to professional activities or organizations at the
regional and, if possible, national level; promotes image and awareness
of WPI through external activities.
- Evening and weekend hours may be required; participation in evening/weekend reference staff rotation.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science.
- Minimum of three years reference experience, preferably with an emphasis on science or engineering.
- Experience with instructional design, web development tools, web
technologies, digital media, other instructional technologies, and
usability assessment.
- Demonstrated ability to create effective instructional materials in both print and electronic formats.
- Experience with and demonstrated knowledge of video/image editing
tools, web conferencing applications, streaming video, learning
objects, and course management systems.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to work independently, collaboratively, and in teams.
- Demonstrated project management, organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Understanding of undergraduate, graduate, and faculty needs at a small university.
JUSTIFICATION:
Research is at the core of the WPI curriculum and the faculty’s
scholarly output. This position links the classroom to the scholarly
research process by ensuring that instruction and research services are
efficient, effective, and relevant to the curriculum, especially as WPI
expands its online and hybrid educational offerings. The growth over
the past few years in undergraduate course-integrated research sessions
and the increasing demand to support complex graduate and faculty
research inquiries demonstrate the continued need for this position. In
addition to the above responsibilities, the person in this position
will be charged with the maintenance and development of the library web
site and online instruction materials, both of which are essential to
the deployment of the library’s information resources and services to
the WPI community.
This position is essential to the success of the library’s newly formed
Research and Instruction Services group. By filling this position,
the Research and instruction group will be positioned to meet current
and future research and instruction needs of faculty and students. The
person in this position will be expected to: advance
technology-enhanced instruction by the design, development and delivery
of electronic learning and online research tutorials; provide research
and instruction services by use of appropriate technologies, skills,
innovations, and collaborations; and support academic departments as
a library liaison by providing research education services and current
information on library resources and services.
The Research and Instruction Librarian:
- Designs, develops and delivers e-learning and online tutorials for
the library’s research education program. E-learning research modules
are provided to all Global Project Program IQP teams as well to an
increasing number of graduate courses. The former person in this
position designed and developed these tutorials, but continued
enhancements are needed. An increasingly sophisticated level of
research education is being developed as more students learn basic
information literacy skills within First Year Great Problem Seminars.
- Facilitates the use of the library’s subscribed information resources
and assists in providing access to course-specific instructional
materials in online environments.
- Manages online research education documentation, including library
web site in collaboration with the Associate Director for Technology
and E-Resource Management
- Designs, develops and provides research consultations and
orientations; including virtual research orientations and consultations
for distance learners.
- Participates as a member of the research group within reference,
including participating in collection development, evaluation of
electronic resources, and provision of research consultations.
