The Lilly Library, Indiana University, Bloomington seeks an
experienced rare book specialist for the position of Rare Books and Special
Collections Cataloging Librarian. Reporting to the Head of
Technical Services, Lilly Library, the librarian will serve as chief rare books
cataloger at the Lilly Library and will catalog books and special collections
materials in various languages and formats. Founded in
1820, Indiana University-Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary into
the flagship campus of a great public university with over 39,000 students and
1,800 faculty members. With a world-renowned research reputation, IUB is also
known for its innovative academic programs and attentiveness to undergraduates.
The campus covers over 1,800 wooded acres and is distinctive for both its
park-like beauty and an architectural heritage inspired by local craftsmanship
in limestone. The Indiana University Bloomington Libraries (http://libraries.iub.edu/) are among the
leading academic research library systems in North America, having recently
been named the top university library by the Association of College and
Research Libraries. The IUB Libraries provide strong collections, quality
service and instructional programs, and leadership in the application of
information technologies. The IU Libraries system consists of eighteen
libraries on the Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a
library at each of the six campuses across the state. The IUB collections
include more than 6.6 million books, journals, maps, films, and audio/visual
materials in over 900 languages. The collections support every academic
discipline on campus, with an emphasis in the humanities and social sciences.
Users can access more than 400 databases, 43,000 electronic journals, and
224,000 electronic books, as well as locally developed digital content. The IUB
Libraries are active members of regional and national associations and
consortia including the Committee on Institutional Cooperation (CIC), the
Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Center for Research Libraries (CRL),
the Digital Library Federation (DLF), and the Research Libraries Group (RLG).
In addition, IUB is a founding member of the LOCKSS program and CLOCKSS
initiative, participates in Hathi Trust, and plays a leadership role in the
Open Library Environment (OLE).
The Lilly Library (http://www.indiana.edu/~liblilly/)
is the rare books, manuscripts, and special collections library of the
Indiana University Libraries, Bloomington. Celebrating its 50th
anniversary in 2010, the Lilly Library’s holdings include about 400,000 books,
approximately 150,000 pieces of sheet music, and more than 7.5 million
manuscripts in more than 1700 discreet collections.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The Rare Books and Special
Collections Cataloging Librarian is responsible for original and enhanced
cataloging of rare books and special collections materials in specialized
areas, e.g. early or fine printing, major rarities, and general books, mostly
of the hand press period. Other duties include advising and
consulting with other catalogers on bibliographical terminology and description,
collations, and other cataloging problems specific to rare book cataloging and
remaining current with the changing body of cataloging rules for rare
materials including DCRM, AACR2, RDA, MARC21, LCSH, and Library of Congress
classification.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
·
ALA-accredited MLS
·
Demonstrated experience with DCRM,
AACR2, MARC21, cataloging components of OCLC, and local integrated
online library systems
·
Competence in the techniques and terminology of
descriptive bibliography
·
Working knowledge of Latin and at
least two other foreign languages (Greek, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese
and other modern European languages preferred)
·
Strong oral and written
communication skills
·
3-5 years post-MLS rare book
cataloging experience
·
Must be able to meet the
requirements of a tenure-track librarian position
Preferred:
·
Second degree in a discipline
related to the strengths of the Lilly Library collections
·
Knowledge of NACO procedures
strongly preferred
·
Experience with
Sirsi/Unicorn products
