Two-Year Temporary Appointment

General Description:
The Grant Manager will coordinate the Tennessee Digital Newspaper Program, an NEH grant-funded program which will digitize newspapers published in Tennessee between 1836 and 1922.  The Libraries, the College of Communication and Information and Tennessee State Library and Archives are working together on this project. The Grant Manager adminsters the two year grant working closely with information professionals across the State of Tennessee. The Grant Manager will develop time lines for project completion and coordinate project activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

35%        Establish procedures for verifying data on complex spreadsheets matches material available on microfilm.  Work independently to coordinate workflow among UT, Tennessee State Library and Archives, the Library of Congress and NEH.  Create positions descriptions, advertise, train and supervise students in using these procedures.Will spend considerable time looking for minute differences in files, including microfilm.

30%        Coordinate grant. This is the only full time position on this grant.  This individual has full authority to make decisions, guided by 20% of faculty member.   Draft annual reports for NEH; arrange meeting(s) of the Advisory Council to select individual papers to be digitized; monitor budget and expenditures for the project; coordinate with Professors of Journalism to ensure essays on inidvidual newspaper titles are written according to deadlines. Ensure project remains on track and meets LC developed guidelines for progress.

15%        Work with Library Technolgy Systems to develop and implement tracking system for 20 1-terrabyte storage units which includes identifying workflows and best practices for  completion of the project.  Act as purchasing contact for materials.Work with the Library of Congress on delivery options for the digitized files.

10%        Implement policies and procedures for the NDNP.  This includes writing and evaluation an RFP for microfilm to digital projects and establishing workflows.

10%        With PI, work with Digitizaton Partner (chosen through RFP) to ensure newspapers are digitized and metadata is produced accurately and on schedule.

 

Required Qualifications:
Masters degree in Library Science, History, or a related field.  Experience can be substituted for a degree with 2 years relevant experience equalling 1 yr of degree (e.g. 10 years total experience would equal the MA requirement.)  At least 6 months working with large digital projects.   At lease 6 months budget experience. preferably with IRIS. Patience; demonstrated attention to detail and ability to organize large projects; ability to work well with people; excellent written and oral communication skills, use of metadata; working knowledge of Microsoft suite of software; use of microfilm readers.  Some travel may be necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:
Work with students, superviosn preferred.  Experience working with grants and/or in a library preferred. Quality control experience preferred.

Salary and Benefits:

Appointment is a 2 year temporary exempt position with a salary of $40,000. Excellent benefits include 24 annual leave days; choice of state retirement plan or TIAA/CREF with nonrefundable contributions paid for the employee by the University; optional group health and life insurance plans. Tuition remission is available for all university employees; partial undergraduate tuition remission is available to dependent children and spouses of UT employees.
