--- Welcome Week Events: 

Welcome Week provides a comprehensive and dynamic array of activities for incoming freshman to give them every opportunity to connect to the institution, meet their peers faculty and staff. 

Life of the Mind book discussions will take place throughout today and tomorrow, Aug. 16-17, across campus. Small groups of students and faculty leaders will come together to discuss this year's assigned book, "Mountains Beyond Mountains," by Tracy Kidder. Students can find the date and location of their discussion by visiting http://online.utk.edu and selecting "Light the Torch" under "My Courses."

Fraternity Recruitment information will be available throughout Welcome Week. The first opportunity to visit one of the information booths will be from 3 to 5 p.m. today in Presidential Courtyard.

Other Welcome Week activities include:

* Monday, Aug. 16: Caribbean Splash Jam, 8 p.m. at TRECS
* Tuesday, Aug. 17: Rec Fest, 5 p.m. on the TRECS Plaza
* Wednesday, Aug. 18: CarniVOL, 7-9 p.m. on the UC Back Plaza
* Thursday, Aug. 19: KnoxVegas Casino Night, 8 p.m. at the University Center
* Friday, Aug. 20: Student InVOLvement Fair, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. on the Pedestrian Walkway
* Saturday, Aug. 21: Matisyahu LIVE in Concert, 8 p.m. at the Humanities Amphitheater

Good News

--- The Division of Student Affairs has a few new staff members welcoming students back for the fall semester. Jeff Cathey, Frank Cuevas and Melissa Shivers are experiencing their first Welcome Week at UT Knoxville this year. Cathey came to UT during the spring semester as a new associate dean of students. Having both arrived on campus over the summer, Cuevas is the new executive director of University Housing and Shivers is the assistant vice chancellor for the Division of Student Affairs.

--- The installation of new carpeting in some areas of Hodges Library begins tomorrow, Aug. 17. The work will limit access to some areas. Students, faculty and staff can obtain books from closed areas by using the request service.

--- UT Muslim Student Association meeting, 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26, in the I-House Great Room. Anyone interested in learning more about MSA and/or discussing plans for the fall semester is welcome to attend. Pizza and drinks will be served after the meeting.

--- UT College of Law admission workshop and recruitment fair, Wednesday, Sept. 8, at various locations around campus. Potential law school applicants are invited to attend the free workshop, and no preregistration is necessary. For more info call 974-4131.

--- Tickets are on sale to the Clarence Brown Theatre and Knoxville Symphony Orchestra's collaborative production of Amadeus at the Clarence Brown Theatre Main Stage Sept. 8-19.
