Kathy - the latter is the case and that's what I thought but I'm not an expert on Medicare. Thank you so much.

If they have health insurance from the part-time temporary position then Medicare would be secondary which means they would not have to sign up for Part B until no longer employed and will not be penalized. However, if the health insurance is based on retirement and they are not allowed to keep the insurance as an active employee because they are in a part-time temporary position ,they would need to sign up for Part B when they retire so that they would not be penalized. Medicare would be primary and Part B is necessary.

I would like toI piggyback on this email with a quick question to the group. We have people working in Extension on Post-retirement appointments. They've retired with federal benefits and are receiving an annuity. Their status with us is as a part-time temporary employee. I thought that when they reached 65 they should sign up for Medicare Part A and Part B but a woman at Medicare told one employee that as long as he was working he only needed to sign up for Part A until he quit working all together. Can anyone shed any light on this?

Thanks much,

Rosemary Veach

Please let me know if you have had salary changes since Herb last compiled them. Thanks.
