AND METADATA LIBRARIAN
Position
and Responsibilities:
The
University Library seeks a collegial, committed, and energetic librarian to
provide leadership and guidance in developing, delivering, maintaining and
assessing the library’s cataloging and metadata services.
The
Cataloging and Metadata Librarian coordinates the cataloging of library
materials, regardless of format, including monographs, continuing resources,
media, maps, ETDs and special collections. The successful candidate will
supervise, train and evaluate staff in cataloging, database maintenance and
non-MARC metadata creation; work closely with staff to evaluate and document
policies, procedures and efficient workflows within the department; and, work
with Digital Library Services and other departments to establish relevant
metadata policies, procedures and workflows for digital projects. As a faculty
member, the cataloging and metadata librarian will perform administrative
duties and participate in university and professional activities, including
research, publication, planning and decision making processes for the
department and library.
The
Cataloging and Metadata Librarian reports to the Head Technical Services and
supervises two Library Technical Assistants in the Cataloging Unit.
Library
and Campus Environment:
The
Technical Services Department is responsible for the library's electronic and
continuing resources, monographic acquisitions, MARC and non-MARC metadata
creation and maintenance, and the physical processing of materials. In serving
customers, the department works closely with other areas of the library,
including, but not limited to, Collection Development, Digital Library Services
and Special Collections. Providing leadership in the establishment of relevant
metadata policies for digital projects is a growing responsibility of the
department. The library uses CONTENTdm to create and present our digital
collections on the web, Digital Commons to host the university’s
institutional repository, and Ex Libris products, including SFX, MetaLib and
Voyager as a member of the GALILEO state library consortium. The University
Library is a member of the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries, LYRASIS,
and the Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education.
Since
its 2007 renovation, the Georgia State University Library provides one of the
most attractive, open and inviting educational facilities in the Southeast.
With over 1.5 million visitors this past year, the library is an integral part
of the university community. It supports both teaching and research with an
expansive collection and outstanding assistance. The library also exhibits a
new, modern image, providing the campus with an attractive, centralized
location. Its signature bridge, a glass link that overlooks downtown Atlanta,
connects the library’s two prominent buildings. Many appreciate the
comfort of the library’s new interior design, often enjoying a coffee
from the cafe located on the first floor.

Qualifications:
REQUIRED:
ALA-accredited
Master’s degree in Library and/or Information Science
Experience
working in an academic library
Experience
with MARC, AACR2R, LCSH, LC Classification, OCLC Connexion and an integrated
library system
Professional
understanding and knowledge of various non-MARC metadata formats, such as
Dublin Core, EAD, METS and MODS
Familiarity
with current trends, best practices and emerging issues in metadata,
digitization and library automation
Demonstrated
project management and problem solving abilities
Excellent
oral, written and interpersonal skills
Commitment
to providing user-oriented services
Ability
to pass a background check
PREFERRED:
Experience
with batch processing of records in a library environment
Experience
developing macros to enhance productivity
Experience
with digital collection management systems, such as CONTENTdm and Digital
Commons
Supervisory
and/or training experience
Reading
knowledge of one or more non-English Western European languages

Salary
and Rank
Minimum
salary of $46,000 for 12 months commensurate with the candidate’s
education and experience. Appointment at a faculty rank, on a contract renewal
basis.
