Faculty Updates Bredesen Appoints Faculty Member to University’s Board of Trustees Gov. Phil Bredesen has announced that J.A.M. Toby Boulet, UT Knoxville past faculty senate president, has been appointed to the nonvoting faculty seat on the UT Board of Trustees. The nonvoting appointments are for a one-year term, with a one-year voting term to follow. Boulet, associate professor of mechanical, aerospace and biomedical engineering, has been a member of the UT Knoxville faculty for more than 25 years and has served on various faculty councils throughout his career. He currently is secretary of the system-wide UT Faculty Council. He was recognized within his department in 2008 with the Outstanding Teaching Award and is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Boulet earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering form UT Knoxville and completed his doctoral work at Stanford University. Oak Ridge National LaboratoryNews ORNL Researchers Win R&D 100 Awards ORNL researchers win eight awards in the annual R&D 100 Awards by R&D Magazine. The magazine selected winners for development of “one of the 100 most technologically significant new products of 2010.” Yanfei Gao, assistant professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was part of the ORNL team of researchers recognized for their invention of “High-performance, high-Tc superconducting wires enabled via self-assembly of non-superconducting columnar defects”. Engineering Professional Practice Announcements PLEASE NOTE: Students receiving engineering co-op or internship offers must go through Engineering Professional Practice if they want recognition for them on their UT transcript. Students receiving offers directly from employers may forward the information to the office and inquire about how to fulfill program requirements and receive credit for their work. Engineering Professional Practice Student Feature Featured student: Ryan Prater Ryan Prater is an aerospace engineering major who has worked two co-op rotations with U.S. Airways. During his second rotation in spring 2010, he wrote: “This rotation, I worked with the 757/767/A330 Group. My responsibilities were to assist the engineers within this group with the projects they are working on. I worked on several things this term, including an ongoing problem with excess noise in the cockpit area of 757 aircraft. Also, I worked on issues involving odors in the cabin and several different repairs dealing with aircraft structures, the fuel system, and the electrical system of the aircraft. “I went to a training course on how EO's are supposed to be written at US Airways. This is a good opportunity to build your resume, and being able to get some hands-on time around actual airplanes helps you learn a lot about how these complicated systems work.” Ryan said the most valuable benefits he has received by accepting the co-op are “making money” and obtaining “good experience to put on a resume.” For information on engineering co-op and internship assignments, contact Engineering Professional Practice at [log in to unmask] or 865-974-5323. The Center for Transportation Research Update A special issue (Volume 2 Number 3) of the Journal of Transportation Safety & Security is out and available online to all UT faculty, students and staff at the UT Libraries Acedemic Journal database. The Southeastern Transportation Center co-sponsored the National Evacuation Conference, held in February 2010 at Louisiana State University’s Gulf Coast Research Center for Evacuation and Transportation Resiliency. Dr. Brian Wolshon, who organized the conference, said, “The papers in this issue represent the latest discoveries and advanced thinking in the evacuation simulation field. The editors believe they will be of value to both researchers and practitioners—not only for the specific hazards and locations they discuss, but in ways that may be applicable for other cities and countries and other types of natural and man-made hazards.” Special Events Forum’s Poster Session To participate in the Forum’s poster session it is necessary to go through on-line registration procedure on the Forum’s web page before August 1, 2010. The thesis of your work should be submitted by e-mail to the electronic address: [log in to unmask] (in the Subject line please type: poster session thesis, section…). Contents of submittedscientific papers have to comply with announced themes of the Forum’s eight scientific and technological sections. The requirements to the abstract are as follows: the main text including short abstract and references should not exceed 8000 symbols and should be typed in Times New Roman 10-th font; all margins should be 2,5 cm Illustrations in jpeg. format (not less than 300 dpi) should be sent as separate files, file names should include information stating Fig1, Fig2 etc, (not more than four illustrations). Thesis title, author’s names and affiliations together with figure’s legends should be sent as a separate MS Word file typed in Times New Roman 10-th font. Each figure legend should not exceed 300 symbols. All submitted papers will be reviewed by the Program Committee of Scientific andTechnological Program of III Nanotechnology International Forum before September 15, 2010. Authors of accepted papers will be notified not later than September 20, 2010. All accepted papers will be presented at the Forum’s poster session and published in the IOP Publishing on-line Journal of Physics: Conference Series. Participants will be informed about the requirements to the posters not later than September 20, 2010. Electronic version of the poster should be sent to organizers before October 1, 2010.
