The Ohio University Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of Arts & Archives.  This new position plays an important role in building upon recent achievements and the distinctive collections of the Libraries, including a recent NHPRC basic processing grant for University Archives and manuscripts backlogs, the acquisition and release on ArtSTOR of the Yao Cultural Artifacts Collection, significant collaborations with campus units on the digitization and preservation of University Archives materials, and an upcoming Lincoln Center/NYPL exhibit featuring the Alwin Nikolais and Murray Louis Dance Collection. We seek an innovative candidate comfortable implementing change; eager to engage stakeholders in a dynamic, fast-paced environment; and committed to working effectively with students, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds.
 
Responsibilities
The Head of Arts & Archives provides leadership and direction for a new department consisting of the Fine Arts Library, the Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections and the Music/Dance Library. Specifically, the department head promotes and advances collection prominence; fosters and develops relationships with units on campus to further integrate art and archival collections and services into research and the curriculum; serves as a mentor and supervisor for professionals in the department; coordinates, promotes and sustains collaborations between departmental units and with other units in the libraries such as digital initiatives, technical services, and the Center for International Collections; participates in grant-writing, fundraising initiatives and donor relations to further the goals of the department and libraries; establishes improvement goals for departmental units in conjunction with the libraries’ strategic initiatives; and serves as the subject librarian for one or more areas related to the arts. Reports to the Assistant Dean for Research and Education Services.

Qualifications
Required

·       A master’s degree from an ALA accredited institution or a master’s degree in history (or other relevant subject) with formal coursework or training in archival management and theory

·       At least 3 years professional work experience in an academic library

·       Demonstrated success leading, promoting teamwork, and fostering collaborative relationships

·       Experience supervising professional librarians or archivists

·       Experience managing multiple, simultaneous projects

·       Experience with reference, instruction and collection development in an academic library

·       Experience with archival collections

·       Effective oral and written communication skills                                                                                                                                                                                   

·       Knowledge of current and emerging trends in academic libraries and special collections, including digital archival collections

Preferred

·       Experience with collections in the arts

·       Undergraduate degree in the arts

 Purpose:   The primary purpose of this position is to provide creative and innovative leadership of library technology and the management and support of the library’s core information systems and applications—i.e., Aleph, Primo, Metalib, SFX, and ILLIAD— as well as support the information and research needs and to improve library processes and services at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

 Major Duties/Responsibilities: 

 §  Coordinates the administration, maintenance and updating of the Library's integrated library system (i.e., Aleph) and other library systems (e.g., Primo, Metalib, SFX and ILLIAD)

§  Contributes to developing the vision of how the library systems and technology can be used to support the information and research needs of the Laboratory community

§  Works with Library manager, Technical Services team leader, and other library staff to ensure the library system is properly configured to support the acquisition, cataloging, serials, inter-library loan, and other technical processes of the library and to automate processes

§  Works with library staff and users to customize interfaces and explore the use social media tools to provide innovative solutions to accessing information and library resources

§  Works with library and IT staff to customize the integrated library system and automate processes as needed (e.g., develop customized reports, create custom programming, develop interfaces between the ILS and SAP and other systems, etc.)

§  Interfaces with the IT department on the maintenance and operation of the library servers and applications—

e.g., to define requirements, troubleshoot technical problems, run system upgrades, and implement new systems when appropriate

§  Collaborates with Library technical services to improve the data integrity of the library's catalog and electronic resource management systems (e.g., Aleph, SFX, Metalib, and ILLIAD)

§  Works with IT staff to ensure integration of library computing into the ORNL computing infrastructure

§  Works with IT staff to ensure library systems comply with all ORNL cyber security requirements

§  Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications Required:  Bachelor’s degree is required with a minimum of five years of experience administering library systems.  The incumbent must have knowledge of trends in library automation and demonstrable experience implementing, managing and updating integrated library systems.  Experience working with the MARC record and bibliographic databases; basic knowledge of UNIX; familiarity with using a text editor in the UNIX environment; knowledge of SQL scripts, HTML and CSS; and software troubleshooting skills is required. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with IT and library staff and to work both independently and cooperatively as the leader of library systems initiatives. Must be self-motivated, self directed, results-focused and committed to achieving goals.  Excellent written, interpersonal and communication skills and a high degree of computer literacy with proficiency in office automation software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint and Word) are required.

Qualifications Desired:  A Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or significant coursework toward the degree, along with substantial experience in administering library systems is preferred. Specific experience implementing, managing, and supporting the Aleph integrated library system and other systems from Ex Libris, especially Primo, is desired.

The Special Collections Research Center (SPRC) of The George Washington University is searching for an experienced archivist to process and describe the records of the National Education Association (NEA), ca.
1857 - ca. 2006. The NEA is the largest organization of educators in the United States of America, with a global reputation of advocating the improvement of education and of the conditions of educators. The collection documents the history and functions of this organization and is approximately 1400 linear feet, including some audio and visual materials.

The incumbent will be responsible for analysis of the collections, and provision of intellectual control, including finding aids in EAD format, and all processing activities according to national standards for treatment of special and archival materials. Incumbent will work closely with NEA and GW staff and will supervise a part-time assistant.

The collection includes NEA publications; official association records; transcripts and videos of NEA meetings and conventions; NEA presidential records; NEA artifacts; photographs; films in various formats and microfiche.

Basic Qualifications: ALA accredited MLS or master's degree in history (or other relevant subject) with formal coursework or training in archival management, and two years' experience arranging and describing archival collections or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience working with various record formats. Experience arranging, describing and collecting materials. Experience conducting reference services using archival materials.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:
Experience working with archival databases such as Archivists' Toolkit.
Knowledge of XML/EAD encoding and preservation procedures.
Supervisory and project management experience are desirable.
