Purpose:   The primary purpose of this position is to provide creative and innovative leadership of library technology and the management and support of the library's core information systems and applications-i.e., Aleph, Primo, Metalib, SFX, and ILLIAD- as well as support the information and research needs and to improve library processes and services at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). 

 

Major Duties/Responsibilities:  

 

§  Coordinates the administration, maintenance and updating of the Library's integrated library system (i.e., Aleph) and other library systems (e.g., Primo, Metalib, SFX and ILLIAD)

 

§  Contributes to developing the vision of how the library systems and technology can be used to support the information and research needs of the Laboratory community

 

§  Works with Library manager, Technical Services team leader, and other library staff to ensure the library system is properly configured to support the acquisition, cataloging, serials, inter-library loan, and other technical processes of the library and to automate processes

 

§  Works with library staff and users to customize interfaces and explore the use social media tools to provide innovative solutions to accessing information and library resources

 

§  Works with library and IT staff to customize the integrated library system and automate processes as needed (e.g., develop customized reports, create custom programming, develop interfaces between the ILS and SAP and other systems, etc.)

§  Interfaces with the IT department on the maintenance and operation of the library servers and applications-

e.g., to define requirements, troubleshoot technical problems, run system upgrades, and implement new systems when appropriate

§  Collaborates with Library technical services to improve the data integrity of the library's catalog and electronic resource management systems (e.g., Aleph, SFX, Metalib, and ILLIAD)

§  Works with IT staff to ensure integration of library computing into the ORNL computing infrastructure

§  Works with IT staff to ensure library systems comply with all ORNL cyber security requirements

§  Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

 

Qualifications Required:  Bachelor's degree is required with a minimum of five years of experience administering library systems.  The incumbent must have knowledge of trends in library automation and demonstrable experience implementing, managing and updating integrated library systems.  Experience working with the MARC record and bibliographic databases; basic knowledge of UNIX; familiarity with using a text editor in the UNIX environment; knowledge of SQL scripts, HTML and CSS; and software troubleshooting skills is required. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively with IT and library staff and to work both independently and cooperatively as the leader of library systems initiatives. Must be self-motivated, self directed, results-focused and committed to achieving goals.  Excellent written, interpersonal and communication skills and a high degree of computer literacy with proficiency in office automation software (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint and Word) are required.

 

Qualifications Desired:  A Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or significant coursework toward the degree, along with substantial experience in administering library systems is preferred. Specific experience implementing, managing, and supporting the Aleph integrated library system and other systems from Ex Libris, especially Primo, is desired. 

 

Work Direction and Interfaces:  Reports to the Manager, Research Libraries, Communications and External Relations Directorate.
