The Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library is searching
for individuals who will have the opportunity to play vital roles in the
Library’s initiatives in services to pre-school age children and emergent
literacy. These grant-funded positions will be four (4) year contractual
agreements and will be eliminated at the end of the funding cycle. They
are listed below:
Early Literacy
Specialist
Under minimal supervision, the successful candidate will be
responsible for the development and the administration of services to children
under 5 years old. Emphasis will be placed on articulating a clear vision
of library service to children, focusing on preparing these children for
reading. Increasing the presence of library service in day cares and
other institutions where children spend their day will be a priority.
Increasing the introduction to books and the rich literary heritage of
storytelling in the branches will be a primary objective, as well. These
goals will be accomplished by training all interested staff in the art of
storytelling and offering regularly updated storytelling idea packets for these
staff to use. Leading discussions about emerging literacy issues will be
a responsibility as well as booking resource specialists to share their
expertise at these meetings. He/she will also be responsible for the
development of a regionalized approach to baby, toddler, and preschool story
hours, capitalizing on the expertise of staff and sharing these skills among
branches. Accountability through evaluation will be a priority.
Minimum qualifications for the position include a
Bachelor’s degree with a specialty in early childhood development or
other relevant degree; two (2) years of experience in children’s work
with significant programming experience with pre-readers; and strong technology
skills especially using technology with children will be given priority.
The hiring salary for this position is $32,435 annually.
Other compensation includes but is not limited to: 10 days of sick leave
& 4 weeks vacation annually, 7 paid holidays, as well health, life, and
disability insurance, pension plan, and a business casual dress code.
Part-time Public
Service Associate
Under the general guidance of a Supervising Librarian or
Agency Manager, the successful candidate(s) placed in these four (4) positions
will be responsible for planning, scheduling and implementing department
and system wide programs, assisting in the maintenance of collections and
managing the daily operations on assigned mobile service routes. Specific
duties and responsibilities will vary based on areas of assignment, but will primarily
involve early childhood and emergent literacy programming for the preschool
aged child.
The minimum qualifications for the position include a
Bachelor’s degree or commensurate experience. A degree in Education
and/or experience in programming for children is highly desirable. Three
years of progressively more responsible clerical work experience in a library
environment or previous customer service experience along with bilingual skills
is desired.
These four positions are half-time (20 hours per week).
The hiring salary for these positions is $515.64 bi-weekly or $13, 406
annually. Other compensation includes but is not limited to: 10
days of sick leave & 3 weeks vacation annually, 7 paid holidays, as well as
health, life, and disability insurance, pension plan, and business casual dress
code.
